Reversible Loop-Handle Purse

Description

Combine two of your favorite fabrics to create this easy-to-make, go-anywhere bag. Because it is reversible, you can get two different looks from one sewing project!

Materials Needed

  • ? yard Fabric A, side one of bag
  • ? yard Fabric B, side two of bag—or lining
  • Thread to match fabrics
  • Fabric marker
  • OPTIONAL: Pinking shears

Cut:

  • two of Fabric A, as directed on pattern
  • two of Fabric B, as directed on pattern

Instructions

  • Use ½” seam allowances
  • Transfer ^ (triangle) markings from pattern to fabric and lining pieces.
  1. To reinforce area, sew a 1” line of stitching just inside seam allowance at ^ (triangle) markings on fabric and lining purse pieces.
  2. Right sides together, place the two Fabric A pieces together matching raw edges. Sew along the sides and bottom of purse, starting and ending at ^ (triangle) markings.
  3. Right sides together, sew the two Fabric B pieces together along the sides and bottom of purse, starting and ending at the ^ (triangle) markings.
  4. Clip into seam allowance from raw edge to just shy of stitching at ^ (triangle) markings on both sides of Fabric A and Fabric B units.
  5. To reduce bulk and make a smoother, flatter seam, trim seam allowance to ¼” with pinking shears or cut out several notches along seam allowance on both purse units.
  6. Place purse units right sides together and pin.
  7. Sew purse units together along handle edges, starting and stopping 2½” from each short end.
  8. Trim seams to ¼” with pinking shears or make notches at curved edges of purse seam.
  9. Turn to right side pulling it through the shorter handle opening. Press.
  10. Right sides together, pin longer handles of Fabric A unit together and stitch across short end, creating a loop. Press seam open.
  11. Right sides together, pin shorter handles of Fabric A unit together and stitch across short end, creating a loop. Press seam open.
  12. Right sides together, pin longer handles of Fabric B unit together and stitch across short end, creating a loop. Press seam open.
  13. Right sides together, pin shorter handles of Fabric B unit together and stitch across short end, creating a loop. Press seam open.
  14. Fold under and press seam allowance on handles of Fabric A unit.
  15. Fold under and press seam allowance on handles of Fabric B unit.
  16. Place handles of Fabric A and Fabric B units together matching seams and edges. Pin.
  17. Top stitch unit handles together close to folded under edges.
    TIP: It is easier to start and stop stitching handles at ^ (triangle) marked points.
  18. Slip longer loop handle through shorter loop to secure contents in bag.
