Absolutely Brilliant....Love It

Just purchased the 8500Q as a 'gift' to myself. I had originally seen a similar machine on a tele shopping site and 'dreamed' of owing a machine with these type of features - the machine was extremely expensive so needless to say it remained a dream. I then wandered onto a website selling the 8500Q and realised that it had all the features at a much more reasonable price - when it arrived i thought i would struggle however threading is easy peasy for top and bottom bobbins - the user manual is clear and after only one day I've been embroidering my name, and trying out the various functions - its sturdy but not too heavy, the sewing table is large enough for quitting projects and overall i am just delighted with my new toy. I have been sewing for many years but never had as much time as i would like - i am not a novice but certainly not an expert however with this machine i feel i can move up a level given quality of the work i will be able to produce....... Look out Ebay, I will be selling my stuff in no time .....

So Happy

I used to own only Singer Sewing Machines, even while living in Germany. Then I was talked into purchasing a different Brand, I never was really happy with that "Brand", which was more for embroidering. I love to sew and quilt. Now, I have so many quilting projects in my Head.

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Love The Selection Of Feet That Come With The Machine!, Great Size Additional Deck Attachment.

Cons: Addthe Deck Doesn't Attach Seamlessly , The Alphabet Is Not The Greatest. It Is Small And Does Not Transition Well From One Letter To The Next Very Well.

I love my Modern Quilter. So far I have been able to quilt, free hand monogram, sew clothes, applique and make some cosmetic bags. I was having trouble with the tension on my Brother and decided to upgrade. I have not once regretted it. The only thing I am not impressed with is the alphabet. It is not very clear but doesn't really bother me as this is not the reason I bought this machine.

I've been a sewer for over 8 years, and until this past February, I never glanced toward a Singer machine.
The machines I prefer have the drop-in-bobbin feature, the low shank presser feet, and the quick needle threader. HOWEVER, this machine made me take another look at Singer. I actually took a step back in the store when the machine caught my eye.

It has TONS of features, AND warning beeps. For example; when the bobbin is low on thread, when the top-thread isn't feeding properly, and when you didn't lower the presser foot. My absolute favorite feature is the auto-thread cutter. Press one button, and the machine cuts the threads, thus producing less waste.

The accessories that come equipped with the machine is above par, and the ease of use makes me so glad I purchased it.

So, lets talk shop. For the price, you get a HUGE machine with a throat that can handle a queen sized quilt with ease. It has a LOT of features, and it's fun to use. BUT, in order to have a HUGE machine, there is quite a bit of weight to the machine itself... 28 pounds according to my scale. So, my suggestion is to park this sucker on a sturdy table, and find another location to do the patch work cutting... OR buy a bigger table like I did! To help you visualize the size; I bought a 4.5 ft dining room table that seats six, and I am able to have my machine WITH it's attachable quilters platform, AND a 24 inch cutting mat sitting next to it.

To date, I've knocked out 4 quilts, a coupon wallet, a few grocery bags, potholders, and an apron. So far, it looks like it should be able to handle the abuse I'm about to put it through (I've got 5 more quilts lined up).

I'm sure there are more little tricks to the machine that I haven't discovered yet, so perhaps Singer could come up with more comprehensive YouTube videos? ... keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

Still learning

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, High Quality

Cons: Complicated

What a wonderful sewing machine. I'm still learning how to use it and I'm having a few "operator errors" especially the threader and unthreading the needle when I use the cutting button. It could be because I use a very large spool of thread. But I don't regret buying this machine.

Has features for almost everything. I have been sewing for over 50 years, not professionally. This machine does all and then some. Nice and sturdy, won't skid around during use. I would recommend highly.

My Experience

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, High Quality

Cons: Complicated, Expensive

28 out of 28 people found this helpful.

Although I have not explored all the capabilities of this machine, what I have used the machine works great. I especially like the ease of threading the machine and the automatic thread cutting.
However with the thread cutting, you have to manually extend the the top thread a little or it comes out of the needle.
I also like how it tells you that you are running out of bobbin thread as well.
With practice I hope to get the full use out of the machine and to be able to use the walking foot.
The one thing that bothers me is that ever once in a while when starting to sew, It tries to draw the material down into the needle plate, and no one can tell me why it does this. It mainly does this when using the 1/4-inch foot.

I am still getting used to all the bells and whistles, a giant step up from my Singer simple that I think I wore out. I like the bobbin I can see, the start/stop button, Still a lot of features I have not used, and the machine tells you when it is not correct, very quiet. I have read the directions and have gone online for questions needing answered for a newbie, All great resources in my opinion. I feel you can't go wrong with a Singer product. Sew ON!!!!

So happy with this machine. It is smooth running, quiet and easy to use. I love the needle threader, the push button reverse and the ability to set the sewing speed. I will be teaching my step daughter how to sew and this machine is going to make it so much easier for her to learn. The price seemed high at first but It definately is well worth the money. It was a great retirement gift from me to me.

This machine is wonderful!

Cons: Can't Think Of Any

I have always been a "Singer" girl. Well made product and easy to use. I had been using the Confidence Quilter (when it first came out and I immediately fell in love with it and still have it, but when I saw all the new features on the 8500Q Modern Quilter, I had to have it. I love the knee lever that lifts my needle and lets my hands stay on the quilt. I also absolutely love the new cut thread feature as well as all the other standard features that I love on this Singer. Since my eyes are getting older I do appreciate the threading feature gadget that helps me thread my needle. Those holes seem to get smaller as I age! LOL. There is nothing I cannot do on this machine and I really love it. Just took a couple of sewing sessions to train the muscles and brain to coordinate with the new features but after that it was back to my normal crazy fun speed and making new projects. I love quilting and this is a wonderful machine for that. Thanks for this new machine Singer!

I just recently took on a new hobby of quilting. I purchased a machine from the flea market just to see if I liked doing it and it turns out that I CAN'T STOP. The Kenmore that I purchased is a turtle compared to my new Singer. I was in the market for a machine that could stand up to free motion quilting and also be really easy to use, as I am not very savvy. Originally I had my heart SET on a Baby Lock Symphony for $2000!!! My husband about fainted when I told him that I was going to buy that machine. It was then that we decided to take a few more days to shop around. I went into Joanns just to "look" and spotted my 8500Q Modern Quilter with a price tag of only $479! I started checking it out and come to realize that this singer is the EXACT same machine, minus 145 stitches and an LCD touch screen...but lets be real here...Who is REALLY going to NEED all those STITCHES?!! Long story short I LOVE my machine and will NEVER go back. Thank you Singer for coming out with a machine that is durable and has ALL the features I could possibly need and/or want at an affordable price!

Sewings Fun Again

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Should Have An Instruction Dvd With It

5 out of 5 people found this helpful.

Just made myself a "gift" of the 8500Q/Modern Quilter machine and I must say I am really having fun sewing again! I just had my 70th birthday in November and have been sewing since I was 10 years old. I have a Singer that I bought back in the 70's and have since passed it on to my daughter, but she doesn't sew very much only mending and such. My reason for buying this "gift" for myself came in a round about way. I started to sew again this fall and wanted to have something that had a little more stitches on it so after picking up one of your information leaflet at my Joann store, I settled on the Modern Quilter. I have been having so much fun trying out all of the built in stitches and there are so many, and the machine is a dream to operate. Your instruction booklet is easy to follow, I just wish that you had included an instruction video to show what some of the stitches would look like. I have to be honest with you, I did buy another brand of machine about 8 years ago and I was not as happy with it as I am with my new Singer.

I've only had the quilter a week but the more I use it the more I like it. I hope it meets my expectations as some people, every sellers, don't always recommend the Singer over other brands.

My dream machine

Cons: Complicated

Love the machine so far. Wish there was a DVD with it. The book doesn't answer all my questions. I signed up for a class at Joann's where I bought it, to help me. I love the features and the quality of the machine. After the class I'll let you know again what I think.

good machine

Had to have machine replaced after 2 months of use, called singer and stated the timing was off, glad the store just replaced the machine, especially after paying $800.00 for it. But did like the machine, hope this one works longer

Does everything as advertised. I made a quilt in two weeks and have never had an easier time. The thread cutter and the open space within the machine are fantastic. Stitch quality goes without saying - it's a Singer.

I wanted a larger bed and harp machine to aid in my quilting. This machine had that, plus much more. I love the thread cutter and the ability to sew circles with it. It has all the features I loved on my DSX-Ii, plus the much large sewing area.

Disappointed

Overall Rating:

Pros: I Do Like The Speed Adjustment

Cons: Poor Quality, I Believe I Got A Lemon

9 out of 16 people found this helpful.

I'm a prolific quilter and when I purchased this machine I was excited to try some of it's features. I was unable to observe its operation at any store in California so I ordered it without seeing it's performance. What a mistake! The bobbin tension cannot be adjusted and my machine does not make a tidy stitch. The pre-programed stipple stitch is so miniature it only covers the space of a penny. The needle threader is not functioning.
