Heavy Duty Series

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use, Great Speed Control

Cons: Don't Really Have One.

42 out of 43 people found this helpful.

This review covers basically all of the Heavy Duty Series (44s, 4411,4423,4432,4452,5532,4443 and Scholastic Series.) they are all basically the same machines, just the stitches are different between the models. A couple of them have more accessories with them.

I give it a 4 star simply because they are not true heavy duty machine because of the presser foot height. That's the one drawback to it being called heavy duty.

I have been using it for about a month as of the review and I love the speed control you have with the foot pedal.

I have been reading the rather mixed reviews for these machines on the Internet and I must say they range from 1 star to 5 and everything in between. Reading the reviews, some lower ones can be disregarded as "new sewer mistakes" and others as never bothering with the manual at all.

The manual is simple because the machine is simple. It's a mechanical sewing machine... just that simple. YouTube has a video from Singer for the 44s... this will cover the basics for all the heavy duty series of machines. The only machine that is different are the machines with the 4-step buttonholes.

I make bags, handbags and backpack type bags. I have a more expensive computer sewing machine, I don't care to use it for heavier materials. Not that it won't do it, I just prefer not to.

This was the machine of choice mostly due to price. A tad over $100 as a factory refurb. Normally wouldn't buy a refurb, but it is a mechanical machine.

It sews a very nice stitch and has little issues with sewing through heavy materials or the layers created.

I bought the Singer accessory kit with all the optional feet for these machines and the even feed / walking foot.

I have not had any issues with tension as others have... but then again, I am not trying reupholster a car interior with it either. Getting tired of people's reviews about home sewing machines not being able to sew heavy leather. These are people that are trying to get away without buying the $1000+ machine they really need. Everyone wants a ~$200 sewing to do the work of industrial machines... PLEASE stop fooling yourself. There is a reason clothing factories are not filled with cheap home sewing machines.

Not sure of the weight, but machine and box weighs 18 pounds so 14 - 15 pounds with accessories and foot controler? Point? Good traveling machine for classes or doing work at someone else's house.

Summary; good first machine and as a backup to take places instead of that heavy $1000 machine, mine weighs 23 pounds and I'm not taking it in the car anywhere - excellent reason for someone to break a window. It will sew pretty heavy materials and sews it very well for a lower end machine.

Watch the YouTube video and/or read the manual before beating up these machines.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, DO NOT TURN THE HANDWHEEL BACKWARDS!!! You are not supposed to on any machine, but these are made so they won't, if you managed to turn it backwards, you probably broke something.

I loved this machine ever since I laid eyes on it. I am so proud to be the owner of such a machine. My aunt is the one who authorized this investment. This machine is so simple to understand and use that I do not feel stressed out when I use it. I threaded the machine and the bobbin and it was super easy using the automatic threader. This is a huge difference, no more broken threaders. This machine is super quiet and because of the heavy weight it does not move around. I had an easy time loading the bobbin being that it is dropped in on the top of the machine. These two features are the solution to making any machine worth using. It is worth the price because it is hassle free when it comes to setting the machine up to use. I practiced the stitches to see how they look and I was pleased at how quick this machine can sew and how many stitches it was able to produce in a little amount of time. Being that it is so quiet to use I can use it whenever I want. I believe this machine has so many good reviews and this was definitely a one time purchase for me. My family is very loyal to the Singer machine. It has been in our family for generations.

I am not a professional by any means, but not a novice either, this machine is easy to use, and pretty straight forward, the foot pedal is a little hard to tweak and get the feel of but that could just be me not used to it fully yet, had it for 2 months and works wonderfully...

New Machine for Bonnie

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Self Threading Is Great, Once I Got The Hang Of It.

14 out of 14 people found this helpful.

Bonnie loves her new Singer sewing machine. She had always had Singer till the last time. There was a sale on and so she bought the other kind. Well that lets you know the "Rest of the Story". She didn't have this other one very long and nothing but problems. Took it in to the shop and well, same thing again. So very unset as Bonnie wanted to do some sewing for the next Sale they were to have and she liked bringing new and different things. This project she wanted to do had to do with sewing and she is sitting there with this "OTHER " kind of machine and can't do her project. Well needless to say, to the store she went... She found the one she needed and went home and started using it the next couple of days as she got the time to work in her sewing. Wow! this is great she thought. No more trying to thread the needle, except this was the only thing she did have a little problem with as the self threader clicks back so quickly and it even scared Bonnie the first time she tried to use it. And it really has to be done very carefully or as I said it clicks back to the starting point. But she got it mastered most of the time, but that would be the only thing that maybe could be changed a little to make it even easier to use. Other than that she is just sewing away and enjoying her new machine so very much. Please everyone, think about it first before you buy, my Dad used to sell Singer sewing machines door to door years ago, why would I even look at another brand. Learned her lesson. It will be Singer all the way from now on. Love the product.... Oh yes, and the best thing was the PRICE was right.......

This is the best basic machine I've had in a long time, Love the ease of using the machine, Plus you can also do 24 fancy machines, I used a twin needle for the first time in my many years of sewing and loved it. I make cloth dolls, Raggedy Ann & Andy's, Orphan Annie's etc., now I can do fancy stitching on their clothes, Thanks Singer

I am a daily sewer who has a small sewing/textile business. I really work a machine when I am in production. My everyday machine was an expensive pfaff and my pfaff breaks at least once a year and needs service- but I love it. I was on a deadline finishing up a large order and my Pfaff broke. I contemplated buying another expensive machine as my "backup" but decided on this Singer. I was actually quite surprised at the ease of use, nice stitch, and it has all the features I was looking for. I got my Pfaff back from the repair shop and am still using the singer as my primary machine. Would highly recommend!

I just recently bought this machine after taking several items to be fixed at the dry cleaners. I decided to learn to sew and fix my own clothes. Well I have made 4 pairs of pants already and plan to attempt a jumpsuit pattern soon. This machine has been great. No problems at all. I was hoping I would pick a good machine since I am not an experienced sewer but I couldn't be happier. Thanks Singer!

So Far Great Machine!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, Easy To Thread And Wind Bobbins!

Cons: Bobbin Cover Plate A Little Tricky For Older Fingers!

4 out of 4 people found this helpful.

So far this machine is a winner! Am stilling getting use to it so I have a lot to learn. Do find the bobbin plate a little tricky to remove. I am a senior citizen and my fingers are not as nimble as they once were. Love the bobbin winder and that I can wind bobbins without untrained machine! Funny, thought I was purchasing model 4452 but am not dissappointed! Purchased this machine after my model 590 stopped working. Had it a long time and did a lot of heavy duty sewing! Have not tried any heavy duty sewing on this machine but expect it to perform as described. Have a heavy duty job I am about to start and will update review. If this machine performs like my model 590 I will be happy!

Great Value!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Steel Frame, Plenty Of Power

8 out of 8 people found this helpful.

Having recently become a single dad, I needed a solution for hemming my boy's pants and repairing their clothes. My ex has an $800 computerized Pfaff that she would spend significant sums on each year for maintenance. I chose Singer because my mom always used Singers and I could never recall her sending them in for service. I hoped this machine could repair jeans, and it sure does! It sews right across the side seams of blue jeans while hemming, which must be about 6 layers of denim! Plenty of power. I did break a couple of needles while I was learning it, but found some heavy duty needles that I may try out. I like the all-mechanical controls, they work great and there is no computer to burn out. Having never sewed before, it took me a while to learn how to set up the machine, and leave enough thread out of the back (about 6") when starting so that the machine does not suck the top thread back out of the needle. Called Singer and after a long hold, the rep easily helped me diagnose and solve my problem (I was only leaving about 3" of thread out of the needle when starting). I love this machine so far, have hemmed or repaired about 10 articles of clothing so far with it, and it will pay for itself shortly! And now I do not need to send 9 pairs of jeans out to the ex for hemming and only get 5 back! Thanks Singer!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: The Auto Reverse Jams Occasionally Causing The Whole Machine To Malfunction

8 out of 8 people found this helpful.

This machine is wonderful, strong and versatile enough for basic work. I bought this specifically to stitch together heavy gauge plastic film for a temporary greenhouse and it punched through 6 layers easily. 8 layers was pushing it a bit though and it would only occasionally penetrated but I can't complain, it did the job I needed it to do. The only issue I had with the machine is that the auto reverse jammed up twice while using it and really concerned me that it had broken the machine. If you purchase this machine, be sure that the needle is completely stopped moving before reversing it or you will have a jam that, based on what I could see when I took it apart to fix it, could seriously damage the inner machinery of the machine. Other than this one issue that is more operator error than machine problem, I love this machine and it was worth every penny!

I was having so many problems with the Brother sewing machine that I had purchased, I decided to try a new machine. I purchased the Singer because it said it was heavy duty and had multiple stitches I could choose from. It has been marvelous to work with and I would highly recommend this machine to everyone.

After using the same Singer sewing machine for 25 years, I was apprehensive about learning a new one, so I chose the 44S Classic, as it seemed similar to my old machine. My first project was a twin needle hem on a sweatshirt. The directions to use the machine are easy to understand, and really, the machine itself has information on how to load the thread, the bobbin, and use the stitches. For all the machine can do and for ease of use, you would expect to pay much more.

The signer classic is a great machine! It fits my needs perfectly. I especially enjoy the smooth and quiet way it sews. The only draw back for me is the fact that I cannot use the reverse stitch when using the zig zag stitch. My IZEK does that.

My first basic Singer was purchased when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter....she just turned 19 and I just bought my second Singer, the first one's still kicking but needs a trip for a tune up. It is sturdy, easy to use and has great stitches and a buttonhole feature which is easy and does a great job. I would highly recommend this machine whether you're just starting out or have been sewing for a long time.

Great machine for the average sewer. I have been sewing for 50+ years . I learned to sew in school on a Singer. My Daughter bought this as a gift for me while I was waiting to my favorite 40 year old machine to be repaired. Not sure if this new one will last 40 years. Only time will tell ,I'll let you know when I'm 100 years old. The only issue I have is the foot pedal ,I would like it to have been the old style which was wider but everything in the generation is smaller. So far I've made dozens of bags and purses and currently working on a quilt , No issue sewing through multiple layers.

I have had a plain singer with just the straight and zigzag stitch no button hole just plain since 2001.....it still works! BUT I wanted more features, so I bought a project runway 100 stitch brother the end of Jan.2014.....I did a few projects the beginning of Feb. and it jammed up, so I had to unjam it then I started sewing this past weekend (it's Mon nite) and it jammed on me 5 times!! On the 5th time the pressure foot lever broke!!! Took it back to Walmarts and exchanged it for this beast and I think I'm in love!!! I have only tried it out alittle bit, but so far it's great!!

Wow... I am so far impressed. I am a crafter making unstuffed stuffed animals and doggie blankets. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted. Bill decided for me and got me the 44S as a gift. Of course I had to see what it could do I was impressed. I mostly work with thick materials and it plowed stitches through the thick material. Light on features but do love the needle threader. Loved the needle threader.

I had wanted a sewing machine and my partner researched all the brands and possible models; and decided this was the one for me - and then he surprised me with this as a gift. We had both been aware of the singer name and reputation. After receiving it, I put it together with no problem. When I called my mom to tell her I'd made the move to finally learning to sew, I found out not only did my mom use a singer all her life, but my grandmother and her mother before used singers. My grandmother had been a seamstress and singer saleswoman. Who knew?! It makes this machine all the more special to me knowing that.
