horrible

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

Cons: Poor Quality

1 out of 2 people found this helpful.

At first I liked the machine but after its first couple uses it started jamming a bunch. I have changed my needle and it is the bobbin that came with the machine. I had my grandfather look at it because he always fixes my grandmother's machine. Well he couldn't even fix it and he's been able to fix my grandmother's machines for 50 years now. I would not recommend this machine. I am very unhappy with this machine. I liked the other singer machines I have had and used in the past but this one doesn't run like the other machines.

OK for the price

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

0 out of 3 people found this helpful.

I bought three before I found one that worked good. I was pretty happy with it but the fourth time that I used the needle threader it would not work. I have tried it many times since and can't get it to work. It is sad that a person thinks that a product is OK when it doesn't work as well as my old machine. The thread breaks easily on this machine so it would be nice if it worked correctly. I am sure if you bought a better more expensive machine it would work better but that is not in my budget.

Sewing with Duck Cloth

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use, Machine Was Cheap For Todays Market

Cons: Poor Quality

0 out of 1 people found this helpful.

This machine does not sew well on duck cloth or I would imagine denim, it would sew for a few stitches then stop make a loud noise then after a few seconds you could sew again only to have the same thing happen over & over again. I've had Singer sewing machines all of my life for some 45+ years and have never been as disappointed with a machine

Not happy

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Reasonable Weight

Cons: Complicated, Continually Jams

1 out of 2 people found this helpful.

Cord to electric supply too short. Since I bought this machine, I have had nothing but problems. It continually goes into a "C 4" error and jams. I have cleaned it, oiled it, the works. The settings are those recommended for straight sewing. My mother swore by Singer.... I personally miss my old Brother machine! After 20+ years, it finally died so I bought this one to replace it. I am so unhappy!!!!!!

instruction manual

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

I haven't used the machine yet, so another review is coming. The instruction manual is driving me crazy though. Why didn't Singer put the French instructions together, and the Spanish instructions together, so that you don't have to weed thru all of that to read how to use the machine in English? It's taking twice as long to go thru the manual, trying to skip over extra languages I don't understand. Usually, a manufacturer will print those in such a way that you can just tear the other languages off and keep what you need. I hate the manual.

Good basic machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

As a 62yo man, just learning to sew (mainly for repairs, etc.), I bought this as my first machine. Was influenced by the brand name (Singer's been the only name in sewing in my family as far back as I recall), as well as the features. I believe 60 stitches will be MORE than adequate for anything I'm likely to wade into. Although some reviews I've read have expressed concern over the plastic parts on top, I don't believe that will be a problem for anyone who treats this machine with even a little bit of care.

The bobbin winder w/clutch: nice to have, and saves me from having to purchase a separate winder - good show.

Needle threader: essential tool, especially for an old critter like myself, with failing eyesight.

Choice of buttonholes: GREAT! Looks like I might be able to make new clothes and not just repair the old ones! Without the buttonholer I don't think I'd ever attempt it.

Stitch guide: Good idea for beginners, like me, who don't have a clue how to use the different stitches.

Although one of the first things I did was to buy a small presser foot kit with nine additional feet and a twin (double) needle, the feet included with this machine will get you started, and it's really nice to be able to drop a foot and snap another in place without reaching for a screwdriver. Good idea, Singer!

Although I can see myself getting another, more complicated machine down the road, over all, I'm pleased with my 5400 and can see myself using it for years.

Loving it!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: None

I got this puppy for Christmas 2013 and finally got around to opening it...(I own another machine).. I wish I had started using it right away! This is my first electronic sewing machine and I was a bit wary of it..lol..silly me. Anyhoo, the ease of using it and all that it can do...I'm either selling or giving away my older machine to my daughter!..

Replacing my Brother

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

1 out of 2 people found this helpful.

Good value and good selection of stitches. Wish the needle could be used middle and side to side and also that the seam guide was easier to see. Using the self threader is NOT easy, following directions. I've only succeeded in using it twice and it's been a waste of my time, considering it was one of the reasons I purchased this model

I've been sewing since my mother taught me at age 8 on an old Singer tredle machine, and have never had anything but Singer since. When my 1970 Singer finally gave out, I decided on this one, and am very well pleased with my new one. There is nothing as yet that I cannot do, and since I make my own clothes plus many different crafts, that is saying a lot.

Birdsnests a Lot

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

Tends to birdsnest a lot. Lower thread breaks while sewing. Tried adjusting tension, but didn't seem to help. After less than 2 years of light use (a few craft projects and mending), machine stopped working entirely. Not happy with Singer's customer service. I ended up trading it in for a Pfaff because it was going to cost more to fix the Singer than I paid for it.

JUNK!!

Overall Rating:

Pros: None!!!

Cons: Poor Quality

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

Don't buy it!! Spend a little extra and get a REAL Singer. The bobbin constantly tangles, can't get more than an inch of stitching without it happening. The bobbin sits vertically, which I hate with a passion, and it does not sit tight, there is too much play in it, which makes it pop out and tangle. There is a tip about threading the bobbin which says, "hit the reverse stitch button once and the needle will cycle once, picking up the bobbin thread". DON'T DO IT!! it can't even do that without tangling and jamming. I have tried different needles, different tension adjustments...basically if you aren't force feeding your fabric through the dogs, they do not pull the fabric fast enough to keep the bobbin from jamming. I hate this thing, I would get more pleasure watching it flying through the air and landing in the street!!!!!!!! My mother's Singer, and my last Singer, were both great machines...this thing, JUNK!! You get what you pay for, find a horizontal bobbin machine, this is my first vertical bobbin and I regret every minute of it!!!!!!!!!

Great first machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Bobbin Is Easy To Access And Use.

Cons: The Computer Part Is A Bit Intimidating At First

I bought this to replace a very old "home eco" style machine I bought 18 years ago. I was looking to start sewing again and maybe do more than the occasional hem or repair. I chose this one for several reasons: price Walmart had it on sale at the time for 120. computer/electronic settings... I had always on the old machine had trouble with doing even straight stitches on any fabric because it was all manual settings and I was not that great. And the last main reason was I wanted to expand beyond straight stitches for hems etc... and this machine offers 60 built in pre programed stitches. And yes while the granny apple green is a bit much for color I love it.

Overall Rating:

Love it... Sews smoothly. Thread guide is amazing. The only thing I would change is at the end of a stitch I wish the needle would set into the fabric instead of coming up. Other than that LOVE LOVE LOVE!

No. Not even.

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Unreliable, Wasteful

Looking ahead I see options for "pros." There are none.

I received my first Singer as a gift and it worked fine. After almost a year I pulled it out to start a project and it didn't work. Since it was the middle of the night, and I had a little extra money, I ran to WalMart to replace my defunct machine.

This looked like it had some pretty great options. And the price wasn't bad, either. So I checked out and went home excited to finally start my project. Straight out of the box the bobbin thread bird nested and the needle stuck and every single time I started over it woulda make a horrible grinding sound and give me the c4 error.

Even if you are a beginner, do NOT waste your time. All this machine is going to do is frustrate you. I should have taken the hint from the spelling error on the first piece of literature I came across. I had to restrain myself from physically harming this piece of junk just because I fully intend to get my money back.

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features

Cons: Has To Be Taken To Shop Just To Have Light Bulb Changed Out.

I had the sewing machine home long enough to set it up and test it out for a few minutes and the light bulb started flickering. It flickered several times and then went out. I have to take it to a shop for the light bulb to be changed out.

No Guessing-Thank goodness the machine knows more than I do

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, High Quality, Machine Knows More About Sewing Than I Do

Finally a sewing machine that knows more than I do. I just pick the picture of the stitch I want and it automatically sets the correct "default" stitch tension and length.
If I feel adventurous to try changing them, it allows me to improvise. If I realize I made a mistake, it allows me to "ask" to be put back on the "default" tension and length.
This makes all the difference in the world....no more "snaggles and knots" in my stitches.
And it even threads the needle for me (a good thing for an old lady who's eyes are not as good as they used to be even WITH glasses).

Disappointed

Overall Rating:

Pros: Cheap Do Not Buy

Cons: Poor Quality

Growing up I've known Singer to be a good brand. This machine did not live up to the name of yesterday. I bought mine at Walmart as my first sewing machine. It worked good the first few times I used the machine and after that just seemed to fall apart. The tension was never right and sewing the thread would gather on the back in a horrible mess. This singer machine is of low quality and was very frustrating to use. I've since bought a different brand machine from a sewing dealer at a decent price ($399) and it sews smooth like butter. And I love it. I will never buy a singer again and will definitely will not buy another machine from Walmart. Do not waste money buying the singer see mate.

I wish I could use it.

Overall Rating:

My machine was a Christmas gift, and I was so excited to use it. I opened up the packaging to find everything intact, however, for some reason or another, there was no power cord or foot pedal. I was incredibly disappointed, and I have not been able to get these accessories mailed to me because the gifter did not give me a receipt. I can only hope that the next sewing machine I get with have better customer service and understanding of manufacturing/packing malfunctions.

Sews fine, but disappointed that it is so noisey - sounds very mechanical. Love/Hate Relationship

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features

Cons: Poor Quality

I purchased this machine for the purpose of making quilts. I teach quilting and it was the nicest machine available. For the first month it purred like a kitten. Loved all the different stitches, loved the soft noise. NOW it rattles so loud I need ear plugs! Needless to say this is my SECOND Sew Mate in under 3 months, and looks like I now need a NEW machine. There is NOTHING in the owners manual on how to deal with this horrible loud knocking! It is sewing like a charm, but this noise is unbearable! Need a better quality machine for what I use it for.

I knowni definitely can! I love to sew, anything and everything, nothing is off limits. I don't understand why people say "There are no attachments" because there are plenty of feet, which for me helps. I just bought mine, I did have a few issues with it locking up, but that was due to my improper threading of the bobbin. After I fixed the issue, I haven't stopped sewing since I got it! So many features, and types of stitches, I couldn't ask for a better machine!

I would give it a 5, but I hate the botton hole maker. Because it never gives the right amount of tension. And the botton is horrible. U can't even do it with and ordinaty button, it has to be the one that came with my machine!! But, I sew everyday! I love it and so many idea's and patterns. I will say I am horrible at patterns. But, I have been making up my own as I go. Its works for me and I do really good. I always have my mom and my granny to help if I need assistance, or them to tell me something. But, I have made my daughters Halloween Costumes, Jem and the Holagrams. And one was Jem and the other was Stormer! But I love quilts and making house things. If u ever want to see the most beautiful and detailed work. U should meet and see all my grannys work and her quilts are so beautiful! One day I hope I am as good as her and my mom!!

This is the first sewing machine I have purchased for myself. I have sewed off and on since I was young using my mother's machines, but this is the first I am venturing out on my own. This machine is very easy to use and the instructional dvd was a tremendous help! I saw some other reviews discussing problems with the bobbin thread balling up underneath the material when sewing, but there were instructions on how to correct this problem in both the dvd as well as several places in the manual and paperwork that accompanied the machine. I have not had any problems using this machine to make several quilts already, and am looking forward to future projects and trying new things!

When I could sew the machine worked very well, I looked at the troubleshooting pamphlet that came with the machine and still kept getting thread bunching up where the bobbin is. I am in the process of returning the machine. I used practically a whole spool of thread in trying to fix the problem and still was not able to get done my own project. I had such high hopes with a new machine.

Makes me miss my old machine. I just bought it and I have gone over and over the instructions. They are easy enough to follow. But the machine is horrible! It won't even stitch one inch without jamming and giving me a C-4 error. I have gone through it again and again. I've spent hours threading, re-threading, changing the bobbin, etc. But it continues to jam. I miss my 30 year old machine!

If there is a level below beginner, that is me. I have never used a sewing machine before, but I wanted to learn how to sew. So my husband bought the 5400 for my birthday. Using the instruction booklet and the dvd that is included I have made several fleece blankets and a few pillow cases. The machine works wonderfully and I have not had any problems. I have even tried several of the different stitches, so much fun. My next project will be a window scarf...looking forward to it. Great machine at a great value.

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Affordable

I chose Singer because I grew up with Singer. My grandmother was a big avid seamstress. She always bought Singer. She always held on to her grandmother's original iron pedal powered machine with the table. Singer has just been one of the family for centuries now.

I recently got the fever myself and after much debate I of course chose a Singer. It was tricky at first but only because I didnt know what I was doing. But the more I played with it the more I learned an the better I got. Now its like 2nd nature.

Its very user friendly. I plan on upgrading to a fancier model next year, but I will hold on to this one. I plan on giving it to my daughter and keeping the Singer tradition going.

I couldn't be happier. The accessories are very affordable and the price of the machine is very competitive and affordable. The most bang for your buck.

The machine works great, and I have not had a problem with it yet. It did come with a crooked presser foot which I thought was odd. I thought they tested them before sending, and I would have thought they would catch that before sending it out. I contacted Singer regarding my problem, and I am still waiting for it to be resolved. It took several e-mails to get this done. It seemed like jumping through hoops over an easy fix. I have not received the replacement part yet.

Hopefully when I get it back it will be a great product.

Good For A Beginner

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Mediocre Quality, Feed Dog Design Is Poor

5 out of 6 people found this helpful.

Compared to the Singer I had for the past 20 years, this sewing machine has more bells and whistles for what I had paid for the other one at the same price. I don't know what it is with quality these days though, as the plastic casing with the Sew Mate, is very cheap-- like a toy. With that said, I did manage to do a first project with it, before having the fabric get sucked through the feed dog, with the next. No matter what I did, the thread ended up winding itself around the bobbin casing underneath, until I finally gave up, and rewound another bobbin-- which seemed to work just fine. The machine isn't really meant to go fast, hence why I say it's good for a beginner. The set thread set up is very easy. The oil that another reviewer mentioned, was just from the factory, as once you get it through a minute or so, it's gone. The needle hasn't broken on mine, because (as stated), this machine isn't supposed to go through at warp speed. Another plus, are the stitch settings that are fun to mess around with. (Just don't pull the fabric, as the slightest tug will actually stretch the stitches, whereas, in a regular machine, it's not as touchy.) So for the money and the quality, I'll say it does the job.

Love it. Very quick and easy to use. Especially like the bobbin winder...much faster. Only setback is getting into the machine when a thread is stuck between the threading mechanisms.

Low-Quality Product

Cons: Poor Quality, Bad Customer Service

I received this as a gift. The thread take-up kept dropping the thread, and then it would tangle in the bobbin area. Changing tension did not solve the problem. I had to keep stopping to re-thread. I sent an e-mail to customer service. Two weeks went by without a response, so I sent another e-mail. I tried calling. I was on hold for an hour and then got disconnected. I gave up, returned the machine to the store, and bought a different brand. The next day I finally received an e-mail response. It was completely unhelpful and told me I hadn't threaded it correctly. I know how to thread a sewing machine. Singer is not the quality brand it used to be.

I am so disappointed with this Sew Mate from Singer. I have had a Singer before so I purchased this Singer Sew Mate from WalMart. The manual is so hard to read as a person has to search through various languages to find English. The thread tangles on the underside, the machine is very noisy, the bobbin is hard to insert, needles break, the machine won't sew over various thicknesses in one seam, buttonholes are hard to place, etc. etc. etc. I wish that I could find something nice to say about this sewing machine. I hope that WalMart will let me return it.

This is the easiest machine I've ever used! It is light weight and easy to carry with you on trips (you never know when the button holes fall apart)! It goes just about everywhere with me!

Worst machine I have ever owned

I swear by Singer and have had several over the past 30+ Years. I have ONLY bought SINGER brand machines. I recently purchased the sew mate 5400, at Walmart, the first one I bought, make a clunking sound, broke several needles (in ONE day), could never get the bobbin tension adjusted right (using the screw?!) and the machine wrecked several fabrics in the process. Returned/Exchanged it at Walmart (and told the Clerk DO NOT Restock this machine it does NOT WORK), got the second one home and it clearly had been opened (Go figure?) and returned to the shelf after someone returned it for whatever defect? ALL packaging was opened, pieces were missing, I decided to try it out to see what the trouble may be with it, and the EXACT same issues with this one!!! No wonder they returned it as well. I am very disappointed in this product. The THIRD one I have~~ it had the WRONG CD (which I did not need really anyway) only 1/2 - 2/3 of the stitch features worked correctly without either the fabric being eaten by the machine or the bobbin tension not able to be adjusted correctly...would NOT Wind a bobbin with quilt thread, it became all tangled and had to cut it off the bobbin, this machine does not sew through ANY layers well, produces BROWN threads in between stitches (have NO Idea what this is from? Dirty Oil in the machine?) I am returning the third one and will NOT buy another. I am considering trying another brand after 30 years with Singer. I have been inconvenienced THREE times and am NOT HAPPY.

I purchased this machine and after 3 weeks of trying to get in touch with Singer through several phone calls (always a busy recording) and email I finally had to take this machine back. The thread kept getting caught up in the bobbin area. Could have been a simple fix but I'll never know :(

Fun features!

I received this machine for Christmas, and I couldn't be more happy with any gift I have ever gotten! My father bought it, and I know he thought of all the fun I could have with all the different stitches, and I sure do! It is easy to use. My only complaint would be that it gets jammed up rather often in the bobbin area, but after the first time, I have figured out how to fix it and it's quick and easy.

Feed dogs quit after only one week of easy straight stiching. Never got to try any other stiches. Customer Service never called/responded to advise return or repair. Returned to store and went back to my $80 Brother machine.

good sewing machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Slow When Use The Maximum Power (speed)

a good sewing machine for beginner and intermediate user. For advance user, it may feel like the sewing machine is not enough fast and has a little lac of power when we ask a lot. Be patient, it works very well but differently as the old mecanic one worked. Technology is great but sometime we have to sacrifice a little bite on something else.

I've had my new Singer for a few weeks now and I just love it. I have an old singer but couldn't order parts for it, its 50 years old and still sews good, just wanted to do more with my sewing. My new Singer is fabulous, been sewing for over 40 years and this machine sews perfect, love the auto needle threader and all the different stitches and buttonholes I can create. I just love it especially the price.

I Adore It

So I decided to buy my first sewing machine knowing absolutely nothing about sewing or sewing machines. I hopped over to my Walmart and purchased a comparable Brother model, got it home and began setting up. I got as far as putting the bobbin into the case and pulling the lower thread up and that's where the process began to fall apart. First, the design of the bobbin shuttle is such that you cannot see what you are doing to thread it. Add to this the fact that mine was faulty (I did not know this for a long time though because I had no experience with sewing machines) and the whole thing became frustrating beyond belief. Early the next morning I took the "BOTHER" back and exchanged it for my singer that I have now. Best of all I can not only see the bobbin case, I can remove it from the shuttle. Every other feature is fantastic as well, again I had NO experience with sewing machines. Thank you Singer, for redeeming the entire craft of sewing in my eyes,

I have been sewing for years. I recently got back into it pretty heavily. I decided it was time to get a new machine and I'd heard great things about the Singer products. My last machine was a Brother. I see now why Singer has such a good reputation. I LOVE this machine! It's easy to use and sews beautifully. It's also a great price for the features you get. The only thing I wish I could change is that it's green. My favorite color is purple LOL.

Not the Best!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated, Don't Stand Up To Its Name

My Sew Mate is not what I expected. It does not sew the way other Singers do.My stitches make poor patterns ,even the zigzag sews straight half the time . It knots and tangles on reverse. And I can't trust it to do any top stitch work because it looks so bad.I hate to say anything about a Singer product, but I am very dissatisfied with my new machine. I don't like the pressure foot lifter on the under side,or the fact that I can't buy attachments for it.
