SInger 160TH Anniversary Edition

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Beautiful To Look At, Sturdy Craftmanship

Cons: Plastic Dust Cover Is Cheap, Give Us A Better Cover

First off, Look at the beautiful workmanship that has gone into this gorgeous machine. Singer has incorporated it's past and updated some of today's latest features into this machine. The touch panel is fantastic and semi auto needle threader is an outstanding feature as well. The machine purrs as it sews and has the feel of Singers past work horses. I am excited as I am using it and happy that it added a beautiful work of art into my sewing/craft room. Thanks, Singer for bringing back such a nostalgic look and working beauty, also thanks for the extra accessories those are appreciated as well. The only thing that needs improvement is the lack of a high quality dust cover, we the sewers and this machines deserve better. Keep shinning!

I read one review on this machine that said that this machine was too loud. Que?! It is only too loud if you have put a pillow over the top and plan to take a nap on it. When they say Model 160, they mean that it took them 160 years to come up with this. It is not a "computerized machine." It does all the "basic" sewing features that you would need right up to the features that someone who wanted a "computerized" machine would want, and there, at that point, the designers stopped. It is a "sewing machine" not a computer. Buttons, hems, zigzags, T-shirt stitch, what do you need? It isn't over designed or under designed. Beginners would like this and tailors might like it too. I have wanted to learn to sew forever. However, all those machines out there are for "girls only." Not this puppy, this is neutral, gents or the ladies, it has class all the way around. What took them so long?

1. Auto needle feed and it works
2. Double bobbin feeds for double needle work
3. Looks both fem and masculine at the same time
4. Extend the arm out and you could sew a tent!
5. Pull the arm off and it is sleeve time
6. Not too light, not too heavy
7. Bobbin is right there
8. I have never, ever, used a sewing machine in my life - period. I did the bobbin, threaded the machine, used the auto needle feed, and watch, when it comes time to make my own suits, I will be on the same machine.
9. Sharp contrast to the white and pink sewing machines out there with the pink flowery thing
10. What in the world took them so long to come out with this?
11. When they are ready to make upgrades to the accessories I hope they call me!

Singer 160 review

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

32 out of 33 people found this helpful.

I love my Singer 160. The positives include: great stitches and speed; the stitch options are enough for me; the needle positions are handy; great assortment of accessories came with the machine; I've been playing around with the flower attachment and it's pretty darn neat, not difficult to use at all; the large surface of the free-arm area is nice; the large tote bag is more like a serious piece of luggage. It's very heavy, durable and of high quality.
I've made a few small items since purchasing it from HSN in January. I made a fleece lined tote bag and some burlap coasters, decorated some towels with fabric strips, repaired some clothing. It did a fantastic job.
The needle threader works great. You've just got to be sure the needle is all the way up and in the right position. The auto-tension feature is one of my favorite so far. It sews beautiful stitches.
I experimented with a big layer of fabrics by using a 'sandwich' of two layers of thick denim, two layers of fusible fleece, five layers of quilting cotton and I loosened up the tension a good bit (maybe at 2) and it sewed like a dream. I couldn't believe it. I did some straight, zig-zag and flower stitches without a problem or growl from the motor.
The machine is beautiful and looks great on my desk.
Okay... now for the negatives: no needle down option. I have it on my previous machine, but it hasn't bothered me too much not having it (so far.) When I remove the free-arm to sew in a tight space, the machine bounces pretty bad. (I have a VERY heavy solid wood desk) so I don't think it's that. I did sew at full speed when it bounced, and when I slow down to a moderate speed, it doesn't bounce. Maybe it's the heavy motor. I'm not thinking the LED lights (there are 3) are that bright. I've read reviews elsewhere that say they are extremely bright. I like a lot of light and always use extra anyway so it's no big issue for me.
My machine came with a small, hard scratch but I can live with it. At first I was worried about scratching up the beautiful black surface and I decided it was like a new car. It's going to get scratches so enjoy the journey.
That's my nickle (maybe dime) review. I think it's a great machine for the money.

Pretty To Look At

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Pretty Design

Cons: No Needle Down Feature

22 out of 22 people found this helpful.

Thing I don't like; no needle down feature, foot pedal cord is too short, bobbin tension is way too tight (even though the manual states that it is perfectly factory set), no handled screwdriver, Cheap cover.

Things I do like; good and useful selection of stitches, stops instantly the foot pedal is lifted, excellent threading system, bobbin pick-up works well, good on-board storage, biggish work area, removing flat bed makes the unit smaller for easier transport, accessories from my other machines fit.

I am surprised that Singer would go to the trouble of making such a nice machine and not include a needle down feature as this is needed when the feed dogs are down and when using the blanket stitch for appliqué and for other stitches. As I will be only using this machine away from home for classes etc I guess I will manage. The cover is a let down, but good enough to use as a template to make a nice one. If it had a needle down feature I would have given it 5 stars.

Best_Looking Machine Since the 1930s

Overall Rating:

I think this machine is just gorgeous! It performs like a commercial machine in a beautiful package. I love how easy it is to change stitches at the touch of a button and it is quite portable as well. The needle threader is great for me as older eyes make that hard to do. I used to HATE changing threads for topstitching or just doing a different part of a project but now I don't mind at all. There are a few negatives. One is that there is not enough information in the booklet provided. It just tells the basic steps but doesn't go into enough detail. My husband, who is extremely handy, had a difficult time figuring out how to attach and use the darning/embroidery foot. There is a small wire-like thing at the top and we weren't sure where it should go. We couldn't put the presser foot up or down, depending on where we placed that "wire" and were quite frustrated. Quite by accident, my husband realized that once the wheel is turned, the foot goes down by itself. That should have been part of the instructions. Once I got it working, I realized that it is very hard to move the quilt around easily because the machine is up so high and there is not enough of a large surface to work on. It doesn't fit into my sewing table and I really want it to be "flat" with the table for easier sewing of larger projects. Any suggestions? I purchased the DVD but was disappointed in it because it only shows what it LOOKS LIKE to do certain things and I was hoping it would better explain how to attach different feet and use them in more detail and not be so general. I wish there was a way to make the needle stop in the down position. If there is, I can't find how to do it because it isn't mentioned in the book. Can that be done? I haven't tried the buttonhole attachment but hope it is as easy as it looks. Perhaps the feet should have been numbered as they are often difficult to identify just from the sketch in the manual. I also agree about the dust cover. It definitely should have been made of fabric. It won't last long.

My grandmother was a seamstress and she did all her sewing on a Singer. That was in the 50's and 60's. Her machine looked very much like this Anniversary Edition. I love my new machine. It is incredible. The features are state of the art and easy to use. Not only is it beautiful, but it takes me down memory lane every time I use it. I feel like a kid again ! Singer...You did an awesome job !

My first new machine in 20 years was love at first sight!

Overall Rating:

Cons: No Carrying Case

When I first saw this new machine all I could think of what I WANT IT! I have three singers in my collection all from the early 1940's the machines that have been put out since the 90s were just something I didn't want because they looked like all the others that were out there. I had gone to the Joann's site and looked at this machine and read though the reviews and seen many negitive reviews but still wanted this machine. I was going to sell two items to get this but my sister did not want me to do that and got it for me it came on Friday, (4/20/12),this machine was all that I had thought it would be. Some of the neg' comments I read was it was to loud well with sewing for more then 45 years I did not find it loud at all.. then finger prints on it well I don't know about you but if you sew with it any finger prints that are on it come right off it for the scratching easy well if you are careful that is not going to happen if you are not careful then deal with it. Its a beautiful Machine I love it and it has got me away from my Featherweight for the first time in many many years. I love the design the color and the way that it sews. I do wish there was a case that I can put it in but with the size it is I have not found one yet.. I would like to say the cover is a wonderful pattern for a cover to get the right size!

loud loud loud

Overall Rating:

Cons: Few Features, Complicated, Expensive

11 out of 14 people found this helpful.

I was so excited about getting this machine, it's gorgeous! I was also excited about all the extra attachments it came with. threading it was easy, but slightly confusing, diagrams in the book are no good, gotta figure it out for yourself. Once I started using it, I was amazed at how loud it is, so loud it drowned out the kids playing and the dishwasher! My biggest con though is that there is no needle down position, for pivoting, if you turn alot, like I apparently do, you need this feature, I will probably end up with carpal tunnel from turning the side dial constantly. Probably should not have bought this, better features, quietness, needle down and ease of threading are to be found elsewhere. But, this machine sure looks good!

Just got this machine and I've already almost completed a baby quilt.I've been Quilting for 20 plus yrs. and I wanted to do a little of everything on this machine to see how she ran.I did piecing and applique done with some of the decorative stitches and I'm very pleased with the way it sews!!! I absolutely recommend this machine. It's not to costly for what you get. I own many different machines and I really like this one!!!! Thanks Singer for bringing back the old fashion Look. I was so excited to own this machine. I could not wait for the debut on HSN. I announced it's arrival at my Featherweight Club and even convinced 3 of my friends to buy one too. I was able to get mine at the Today Special Value Rate of $379.95 with no charge for shipping, and payments of $79.95 per month x 5 months. You can't beat that price anywhere! It also came with a red embroidered bag, a Singer Retro Book, and lots of extra feet. One of my friends called and said she was dissapointed that her machine was already scratched before she got it out of the box. I opened mine today and it too already had 2 scrathes and a scuff mark on the sewing bed. I tried to wipe it off with my finger and it put a scratch in the finish, and then I used a mircofiber cloth and it too added a scratch. Singer could have done a better job on the finish of such a beautiful machine. I don't even want to think about what it's going to look like after I put a pin in a quilt block and slide it threought the bed of the sewing machine :(. I was also disappointed that there is no needle up or down option, the ability to sew without a foot pedal is also lacking, and the dust cover just plain cheap for such a beautiful machine. Overall I am just happy to sit stare at my new beautiful sewing machine but sad about what will happen to the finish when I use it.

Had to have this machine even though I have remained a novice since I first learned to sew when I was a child. This machine is so easy to use it makes you want to sew. Having it only a week I have darned everything in the house that needed repaired, replaced a coat zipper and made my daughter an denim purse using the flower foot. The automatic threader and drop in bobum have taken away all my frustrations. The mini surger is much easier to use than I expected its great for shortening tee shirts for the kids. I love everything about this machine and am looking towards years of creating things for my family and friends.

Love to sew

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

Cons: Complicated, More Trouble To Fill A Bobbin

7 out of 7 people found this helpful.

This is my first new singer since my Touch Tonic 2000. I love the way the 160 looks as I grew up sewing on the treadle machine. The sewing is good but not as smooth as my 2000. However, Filling a bobbin is a pain if you run out while sewing on a project. The bobbin is also difficult to get out of the machine. On my Touch Tonic you could fill a bobbin without having to un-thread the machine. The needle threader is actually in the way for me. Lighting is not as good on this machine as it was on my old machine. So far this is the best machine of all I've tried and I plan on keeping it. Some features could have been better. Thanks for the old fashion look!

Cons: In An Ideal World, This Machine Would Come With Automatic Needle Down....

I've had this machine for a couple of months now. I bought it mostly for it's great looks, but it has proven to be a real workhorse of a machine! It sews easily through multiple layers and I LOVE the Swiftsmart Threading and electronic stitch selelction! Besides being very easy to use, it's also great to look at! A very modern machine that gives a visual nod to Grandma's SINGER 201~

Only disappointment was that the US launch received additional accessoeie with there machine that the Australian launch did not receive. A beautiful machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, It Sure Looks Great On My 1921 Singer Treadle Cabinet!! Oh Yes, Just What My Sewing Space Needed, And Very Much A Conversation Piece.

Cons: This Machine Is A Lot Noisier Than I Had Expected It To Be, My 1925 Singer 99-13 Sews Quieter!!those Who Say It Purrs?? I'd Say Mine Whirrs With A Whiney Noise.

5 out of 6 people found this helpful.

This is a good machine. I bought it for its looks and got what I wanted. The push button stitches are great, the flower and hemming attachments work well and I am happy with what it does. The automatic needle threader is a great helper, I can't see that well at my age, plus it saves time threading the needle. When I changed my needle, oops, it doesn't work anymore!! I finally read online that all the Singers and Brothers with automatic needle threaders do the same thing, they get a bit out of line. So, a tiny tweek with my 'ladies' needle nosed pliers got that little wire back in line with the hole in the needle and I am back in business!!

It is a beautiful machine!! I love the color and style. It is easy to use and would make an excellent first machine. I do think the threading is tricky through the top tention, but the needle threader worked great. Love all the added presser feet that come with. I have used half so far just to try them out and they worked great. I love the wider bed it works good for quilting. The storage drawer is very handy. The cover is wimpy but the red carring case is really nice. Thanks Singer!!!!

Very nice machine! It's a little noisy, but the features more than make up for it. I love the variety of decorative stitches, and the ease of the back-tack button. My 160

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use, Large Sewing Area.

Cons: Poor Quality, Few Features, Finikey Needle Threader.

2 out of 2 people found this helpful.

The 160 has a lot of things going for it. First, the bed is larger than most so projects don't just fall off the edge. The threading is awesome! Couldn't be simpler. The control panel is easy to see and use. Many features of this machine are what you would expect from a brand like Singer. However, the needle threader does not always work smoothly. The case is a soft plastic. I would have liked to have seen aluminum or a hard plastic on an anniversary machine. I would also like to see more than one button hole on a machine at this level. I have not had any major problems with my machine and it is in use with another new Singer as well as a different brand, high-end machine and a different brand serger. Even if I were to take it out of rotation I would still keep it for my daughter the way my mom always had a Singer for me.

Received the machine today and it is AWESOME. If sewing machines are sexy then this is SEXY. I set it up and sewed some stuff. Smooth, quite, and it sews like a dream. The craftsmanship is beautiful. I just love everything about the look and feel. I machine piece quilts and I am looking forward to using this machine many years. I loved when I first turned it on and it lit up like a Christmas tree. I was not looking to purchase a sewing machine but I ordered it as soon as I saw it on line. Good job Singer!

I didn´t think a sewing machine could look beautiful. But then I saw the Singer 160. I just fell in love at first sight! The machine runs smooth and nice. The LED-lights give you good overview of what you are doing. I especially like the large sewing space the machine provides. And when you are done sewing, it´s just nice to be able to have the machine as a nice decoration in your home thanks to the cool design.
However, it´s sad that you are not able to buy the Singer Anniversary carrying case, which HSN included in their offer, separately. Thats a big disappointment actually.
Other than that, this is the best sewing machine I have used so far!! Keep up the good work Singer!!

I am an avid sewer/quilter and have collected Singer machines...I currently have 3 Featherweights! I love this new machine and have already completed a quilt top on it. I am a little disappointed there is no needle-down option; as well I was disappointed there were no "extras" (case, feet, etc) in Canada that were included in the U.S. I would think the market in countries other than the US would be just as large and it would be good marketing sense to include the rest of us!

I have owned Singer machines for years and my Featherwweight was always my favorite, so when this machine came out I had to have one. Mostly I love the way it looks, but it does sew a very nice stitch and has a good selection of stitches with the touch of one button. However, I do agree with those who say it is noisy. Not an annoying clackity noise, but a loud hum. After all, it is a Singer, some noise should be expected. Over all, I enjoy the machine, love looking at it. The dust cover, if you can call it that, is ridiculously thin and flimsy, why bother at all Singer?

A great value for the money. The one word to describe this is smooth! I was happy to see the drop in bobbin, needle up feature and most of all, the self threading for both bobbin and needle. The one step buttonhole is excellent and the feed and motor are both very smooth. The rounded bed front keeps fabric moving smoothly. Out of the box I was sewing within five minutes.

Singer 160

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

Cons: Would Like To Have Seen A Needle Up/down Feature, Would Like To Be Able To Get A Carry Tote Designed For This Machine

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

I have just had this machine for a couple of weeks. I am so impressed by its quality of stitch and the many attributes of different stitches, needle threader, consistency of stitching and the user friendly machine. The ability of this machine far surpasses the cost. This is one of the very best machines I have ever sewed with. This machine was a gift and I plan to take it to quilting workshops as well as use it at home. I would recommend this machine to anyone who wants a machine that has consistency, diversity and ease of use.

Overall Rating:

i really like the new singer put out for their 160th anniversary. i love the look. it is sew easy to use and has just the amount of stitches needed for the projects i do. i purchased this machine to take to sewing classes and retreats. i get many compliments on its looks! the only thing i don't care for is the weight of the machine. when i purchased it i guess i had the featherweight in mind as it is so retro looking.

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I just bought the Singer 160 Limited Edition. I am so happy with this product. I have been sewing for 44yrs. and I always had a singer, I cant see using any other machine. I have tried other machines but always went back to singer. Thank you singer, my grandmother used a singer and I would always watch as a young girl. Now I am my grandmother, again thank you Singer.

Really enjoying this machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Expensive, A Little Slower Than I Might Like.

Sews like a dream for the most part. I have had a little trouble with tension, but it was easily resolved. It is beautiful and easy to use. Has been great for making garb for my hubby who is in the SCA. Making clothes for reenactors is a great test of a machine. It handled all weights of fabric with no problems. I am really enjoying this machine.

Best Birthday Gift Ever

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

This machine is HUGE!!! I love it for quilting and doing basic sewing. It is a bit noisier than I would like and doesn't have a couple features I fell in love with on my Brother. I would still recommend this machine to somebody who loves to do quilting since it has such a big throat and you can do free motion with ease.

Awsome

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Love The Gold

Cons: Black Shows Smudges

This is my First Singer sewing machine, I used it for the first time today and I feel like I just turned Professional! There is No comparison to the Brother I just replaced. The quality of the build and performance of my Singer 160 is Perfect. The only negative I can say is the black color, it shows every fingerprint and smudge, probably why they are coming out with the Singer One.

I waited not sure whether to get or not, finally gave in (I have 3 Singer Machines) I am realy happy I did. It is heavy, and it is not noisy like some people say. I love all the electrnic functions. The auto needle threader does work. This machine sews like a dream. I am very glad I gave in and got it. I wanted it because the look reminded me of my grandmothers machine. But what a change, my grandmother would have loved it too!!

I didn't give it a 5-star review as I haven't tried all the features yet. But so far I have been very satisfied with the performance and sturdiness of this sewing machine. It also looks very cool on my craft table.

Sews Beautifully!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Lacks Needle Up/down Feature; Should Have Been Standard, As Loud As A Freight Train When Sewing.

My Singer 160 makes beautiful stitches, (including the buttonholes). True auto needle threader. Lots of feet, (including the buttonhole foot with underplate for when stitching over heavier fabric, and a circular stitcher)
My Singer 160 is noisy/loud, all though not a big issue. Really wish it had a needle up/down position.

A lovely machine, but ...

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Noisy, No Needle Down Feature

Great looking, great value, sews like a charm, even through difficult fabrics like neoprene and velcro. Tension is great, and no problems with different threads like rayon, metallic and nylon. Good variety of stitches, though having a button to reverse the direction of the stitch would have been nice.
Here's the "but" - I was rather taken aback at how noisy it was, particularly in my small sewing space - that's taken some getting used to.
I'm also disappointed that there isn't a needle down feature: for anyone who does a lot of applique that's a feature hard to do without, particularly since this is going to be my "workshop" machine.

The Singer 160 Sews Beautifully!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, Sews Beautifully!

Cons: Loud, Needle Up/down Feature Should Have Been Standard.

My Singer 160 makes beautiful stitches. True auto needle threader. Lots of feet, (including the buttonhole foot with underplate for stitching over heavy fabric, and the circular stitcher).
My Singer 160 is loud, freight train loud, (and I can ONLY speak about MY Singer 160, the one that’s in MY possession, NOT someone else’s 160). Over the years I have several Singer sewing machines/sergers, love them all, and they’re all quiet, THANKS for that, yeah! So, kudos to those who said their 160 is quiet, be happy for that, (I wish mine was too, however, love this machine and so kept it).
Really, really wish it had the needle up/down feature, for quilting’s sake, (so when quilting, I’ll use my Singer Quantum L-500).

For your first machine, maybe

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality, No Needle Down, Too Loud, Accessories Drawer Doesn't Work Properly

I bought this because I have 9 other sewing machines (5 of them Singers) and I loved the retro look of the machine. When I got the machine it was easy to put the pieces together and I loved all the extra attachments that came with it from HSN. However, my opinion changed when I started using it. It is very very loud, and I found the machine to be slower than I am used to, even with the pedal to the metal. It does not have "needle down", and as a quilter, this is an absolute must for a new machine. Other problems were the accessories drawer that is supposed to "pop out" of the left side of the machine when the button is pressed - it does this properly only if the machine is tilted backwards when pressing the button. On a flat surface, it does not work properly. Also, the 1/4" foot that was in the added accessories, is not easy to use like the ones you can purchase in the quilt shops. I returned this to HSN for a refund, because this is not the machine I thought it was going to be. Perhaps if this was your first machine, it would be fine, but it was not up to my sewing machine standards.

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Could Handle A Little More Speed.

Love almost everything about this machine. It's the most beautiful piece of plastic I own. Seriously, I have the original and I love looking at this one. The plastic and size are the 2012 update...works for me. The only thing I would change would be the speed. I like to sew a little faster than it lets me.

Singer 160 is The Bomb!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use, Looks Beautiful!

Cons: No Needle Down Option

I purchased this machine from HSN in August. The first thing that caught my eye was the look of the machine. It is GORGEOUS! I love the retro black color. I use it quilting. It has oomph! in that it can sew effortlessly through several layers of fabric at once. It has a wide opening that provides more room for maneuvering my project. It has substantial weight and is stable and doesn't bounce around on the sewing table. It beats my other machine of another name brand in every category (except I really wish it had the needle down option). I am counting on many years of sewing pleasure out of this baby!

New Retro Singer

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Plastic

I was disappointed that the whole machine is plastic and the decals don't look as good as the ones on my 1870 treadle do. I don't like that the handle to lift the presser foot is underneath on the right as I am left handed. The Singer Merritt 4160 that I have been using since 1985 had it on the back, much more convenient! I am disappointed that I cannot find the Limited Edition tote bag at all! But my oh my, the stitching is awesome and I love the thread cutter placement and ease of threading the machine. Can't wait to do sine specialty stitching!

I Vote Singer 160 The Best Affordable Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I ordered my new 160 through Costco and the coupon made this machine most affordable! It arrived @10am and after a quick read through the manual, I picked up the Quick Start Card plugged in my machine- filled a bobbin & needle that was included, filled the bobbin and began sewing!! There was minimal noise as I have a big mouse pad on my sewing table..It did take 2 tries (best with glasses on) to thread it correctly to fill the bobbin correctly and thread it correctly..And I'm sewing..Now I plan on joining the local Quilt Guild and start sewing my first Quilt. This is my 5th Sewing Machine and it does EVERYTHING even some decorative stitches. I think I can donate my Heavy Duty School sewing machine and my old QE-132(it was my first to be able to drop feed dogs for quilting). I LOVE Singer putting the essentials to start sewing right away! Congrats 160 years of making an affordable machine! Now I don't have to spend savings for a new car to buy a new sewing machine. I have had other brands & this surpasses them all w/ease of use and affordability.
Thank you for good Quality, Affordability and it all in 1 box.If someone's machine doesn't do all this, then I recommend them to Re-Read the QuickStart Card and Re-thread Machine.
Sincerely,
One Happy Customer!!
Arlene

Black Beauty

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Beautiful To Look At

Cons: Needle Threader Hook Must Be Adjusted For Automatic Needle Threading.

Love my Singer 160!!! This is my first sewing machine - purchased in rememberance of my Mom... It's not really that loud, as stated by other reviewers...after all, its a Machine therefore it will emit some noise during operation...I am a beginner so all the features I tried so far works great, except for the automatic needle threader....Finally called the Company and a Rep advised I had to manually adjust the needle threader hook...often required when you change needles. Once I did that, the automatic needle threading works.

160 not so great

Overall Rating:

Just took my brand new machine out of the still factory sealed box. Plugged it in, trieed to wind a bobbinn and nothing happens. Everything is plugged in, the lights are on. Nothing.
Not a very positive way to begin.
My Vikings never gave me one moment of grief, as well as all the different Siingers I have had in my life (including my mom's from 1951). So in order to do the mending I needed to do, I will use my Viking Diamond!
Maybe that is why I got this machine on close out at my local retailer for only $299.
If I receive any respone to my email to customer service and my machine will work, I will be happy to change my review.

Very Nice Machine!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use, Solid Performance

Cons: Please, Please Separate The Languages Into Sections. Its Difficult To Read A Manual When You Have To Skip Sooooo Many Pages To Continue., The Needle Up Option Should Have Been Included.

I finally caved and bought a new sewing machine after 27 years of bliss with my Touch Tronic 2010. This is a solid machine that performs well even though it is a little limited. Yes, the dust cover is cheap (Singer really needs to offer a display case for this machine.) Yes, it makes a sound when it's working. Yes, you have to read the manual to get the features to work. And, it's BIG! But it's a beautiful machine and handles well. I'm a very experienced sewer and this is my 6th Singer machine and I'm keeping it.

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: See The Above Comment Thread

Overall a great machine. We have been sewing quilt patterns, backing and cover sheets without any issue. If you place a small guide just past the thread spindle, the thread would peel off the spindle a lot smoother. Also If the thread spindle could have the option of locking vertical would also help in a smooth thread delivery.

Great Machine, Except for One Thing

Overall Rating:

Pros: Beautiful To Look At.

Cons: Lamp Sheds Insufficient Light; You'll Need An Additional Light Source., Body Of Machine Not Steel, But Plastic; The Lack Of Weight Allows The Machine Skitter Around While In Use. Also, The Plastic (compared To Steel) Just Feels Cheap.

This machine runs well, and I found it to be very quiet, even though some users disagree. It has all the features you could ever want, but it has one serious flaw: the light that illuminates the work is one of those energy-saving bulbs, which means the light is feeble and blue-ish, and you will need an external light source, such as a mini high-intensity lamp, so you can see what you're doing.

Classic

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features

I am the owner of three antique Singer sewing machines - a commercial machine dated 1919, a featherweight manufactured around the 1930s and an old treadle machine (don't sew on this one). Both of the others are lovely straight sewing machines, so I was naturally drawn to the Limited Edition and that fact that I could use a machine that has a little more than just straight sewing. I was excited to get a few decorative stitches also for a great price. I haven't had a chance to do a lot of sewing on this machine, but my age is showing as setting it up wasn't as simple as I thought. The DVD is no help as it just states refer to your manual, and the diagrams in the manual are terrible, but nonetheless, this old lady (early 50s) was able to figure it out. It was bigger than I thought. I believe I will get quit a bit of use out of it.

I purchased a tinny maching

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality

I have been sewing since a teenager and now
I am 77years young (1935). This is my first
"Singer" product. Purchased it at a Viking
store localy. The first time I turned it on
everything looked wonderful..Started to sew
a straight seam and I thought I had a 16 wheeler in my house. It grinds and makes such a racket that the noise is very disruptive. It makes one afraid that it will
break in half if you go any further. Went back to Viking and she said there is nothing wrong with it...they all work that way..loud and grinding. I won't go into the stitching except the length is sometimes very short length and at other times it looks like a basting stitch, and I have not touched the stitch length bar (key). This is my first experience with Singer and believe it's my last. Would I send it back? I will not spend my time or
money to do so.It's just not worth it. I am one very dissatisfied customer who thought Singer to be upscale in product like Bernina.Never again.

Sadly Returned the Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Looked Very Pretty

Cons: Poor Quality

I have been sewing for 50 years and thought I deserved a new, beautiful machine, so I bought the SINGER 160. I was sadly disappointed. There were problems from the start using decorative stitches. I followed the recommendations from the website, bought different needles and thread ( something I have never had to do with other brands of machines) and still there were problems. I returned the machine. It was also very hard to see the thread on a black machine.

What a Surprise

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, Retro Look

Was hesitant when purchasing as I collect old Singer machines and wanted to add this to my collection. What a surprise when completing a recent project and a few fixes. This machine plowed through several thick layers of denim with no problem whatsoever. The stitches are even and well placed. The machine is very easy to thread, sew with and use. The versatility of the machine and stitches available make it a great machine for the home sewer. My new machine of choice.

Comparing the 160 to the ONE

Overall Rating:

Pros: Handsome Machine!

I have not purchased my new sewing machine yet but thought it helpful to state that in my research for a new machine I don't see the difference between the 160 and the ONE sewing machine. I only see that the 160 is more expensive because of the vintage look. Am I missing something?

I love this machine.... I've been sewing over 50yrs and the ease of using this machine is fantastic. The different stitches only take the push of a icon. Got one of these for the grand daughter to teach her to sew and figured i should have one too. A perfect buy in my mind. The automatic threader is perfect for the older sewer.

Frustrating Gift

Overall Rating:

Pros: Unknown

Cons: Poor Quality, Lack Of Response From Customer Support

I received the 160 Anniversary edition as a birthday gift.
Out of the box everything looked great, but the feed dogs do not feed the fabric and sit too low even in the "up" position. This is obviously some defect in the manufacturing, and I am reluctant to work with it by manually feeding fabric out of concern I would further damage the machine should the moving parts be misaligned in some way. I have emailed Singer customer support, and have yet to year back from them one week later. So now I am left with a nice looking sewing machine taking up space on my work desk. Would have hoped for better quality control after reading all the positive reviews.
