just received this as a gift and it does not work. no support staff available. gift came from out of town. and the closest repair shop is 3 hours away. not impressed. a call to the local repair store quoted the price to fix the problem and its almost as much as the machine cost to begin with

Of course it's Brilliant!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Handles Most Materials With Ease!

Cons: A Bit Noisy & The Mechanism Is Somewhat "clunky" Compared To Other Machines. Light Is Not Bright Enough.

GREAT machine for the price!! Lots of useful features as well as numerous fun extras! Wish the light was brighter and the actual sewing motor/apparatus was less clunky and more quietly smooth.

Disappointing

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features

Cons: Poor Quality

3 out of 4 people found this helpful.

I was very excited to get this machine as I'd had a very basic brother machine previously. While it worked, it was a great little machine, but overall not worth what I paid for it considering I only got a little more than a years worth of use out of it. The bobbin gave me much difficulty that I never experienced with the brother. I don't think it was threading the bobbin evenly and I ended up tearing out a lot of jumbled up thread. The "automatic" threader stopped working after I had owned it for a mere 13 months! Which meant that I couldn't use my warranty. Then the needles started breaking. I now can't use the machine at all with all these problems and feel that it'd probably be cheaper to go and buy a new machine than waste another cent on this one. I was very disappointed to say the least!

Brilliance to Blinded

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: No Continuos Back Stitch, Locks Up And Out

I received my new machine as a gift from my daughter. The first couple of times I used the automatic threader, it worked, and then no more. It will not pick the thread thriough the hole...so old fashioned way will have to do. I was able to finish a blanket top with several of the decorative stitches, which I thought was wonderful. The stitching was even and the machine will not go fast enough to mess it up. However, when I attempeted a second throw for a grandchilds gift, the machine locked up. The error message was of no help and I'm a machine down. No reset buttons or any help on-line. Now my daughter is unhappy because I've had issues with her gift to me...Who was to know that what used to be a reliable sewing machine, "SINGER" has lost some of its magic. I'll go back to my old machine of 12 years and finish up my projects. :-(

I got this one at Target for a very low price. I loved how it came with a informational video, which I wathced while I was working on my projects. The video was awesome because I didn't know I needed a mat, rular and roatary scissors! The only thing is the extra table thing they put in for free was not high quality, but I could still use it! You should bye this sewing machine!

Disappointed

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

I love the features of the machine, I mean, fully automatic buttonholes? They're great! Come out perfect every time. However, I've only been using the machine for about 2 months (working on a costuming project) and it has stopped working on me twice now. I already took it in for repairs once, and now have to take it in again. The foot pedal has some kind of problem with it and just stops responding without notice or any kind of obvious cause. Also, the bobbin winder doesn't wind the thread evenly, which causes other problems when sewing.

Received this sewing machine as gift for my second residence, which means I had to wait several months before I could try it.
Now totally excited to start using it......it appears that the pressure foot doesn't touch the dog feeds. I can only use this machine if I fold my fabric 4 times, and then it is perfect ?!?!? Customer Service tells me to send it back to Service Center (out of state) to have the warranty work. Postage with insurance would cost more than a new machine...which leaves me very disappointed.

A Great First Sewing Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use

This was a Christmas gift and I have really come to start knowing my machine. It is easy to use. I am an strong believer in the thought that you really should read the directions before you use it. I was a bit wary of some of the reviews but have no complaints at this poing. It was a bit of a change for me from the 22 year old machine I was using. It is a great first sewing machine- it comes with well stocked start-up set (accessories) and is a good value. I know many seaasoned sewers may find the machine as a nuisance. But for a novice to intermediate sewer it is great. My fave aspects are the automatic needle threader, the reverse function (which takes a bit of getting used to) and the variety of stitches is a plus. I love my machine.

It sews like a dream right out of the box! From lightweight to heavyweight fabrics - all stitches work beautifully!

I watched the cd/video included, from start to finish, before I used the machine and would encourage everyone to do so! I learned so much!

I am going to buy a second machine for my daughter's birthday!

Only used once

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

I am experienced with sewing. Sewed mostly on a very basic Kenmore. Decided after 20 some years to step up. Hemmed one pair of pants and the sewing job was beautiful. Extremely pleased - started making a softside children's book and could not get to the machine to do a tight zig-zag stitch over the outside edge. Bobbin thread continued to knot up. Took bobbin out - cleaned the thread out - could not get the bobbin thread to work again. Just took the machine back.

Great machine for the price

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I've been sewing for 50+ yrs and all of my machines have been Singers. This one, by far, has been the best equipped with everything built in the machine. I'm still getting used to it, but so far I'm very pleased. It's a pleasure to just push a button & get the proper stitching, length, width, etc. I only have one problem and that's with the auto needle threader. I'm sure I'm not doing something right and will eventually figure it out, in the meantime I'll thread it the old fashion way. This machine is so light weight and easy to lift. I would like to see the instructions a little larger and with more illustrations. As usual, Singer has produced an excellent product for the price.

I like the 6199

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

So far, this new machine is much better than my old one. I mostly make hammock related gear, and this machine has enough power for the jobs I do. I am getting old and my eyesight isn't what it use to be, so I was tickled with the automatic needle threader. But, right out of the box the threader didn't work. The little hook didn't come anywhere close to aligning with the needle eye. I took a chance and bent the hook down and to the left a little, till it lined up and came thru the eye and it works fine now. Other than that, I can't find anything I don't like about the 6199

Bad Machine for experienced sewing/quilting

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Can't See Bobbin Thread, Needle Breaks Easily, Can't Open It Up To Clean

38 out of 40 people found this helpful.

I have been sewing 25 years and have worked on everything from quilts to dresses to costumes and this machine is by far the worst! It is poorly made out of plastic. You cannot see the bobbin thread without taking the whole front section off and the bobbin out. Everytime you shut the machine off you have to reprogram the stitch you want (if you stopped in the middle of something). It breaks down easily. I had to replace it once after only one project because the needle alignment was off and needles kept breaking. I am on my second one and making a skirt for an important event is taking five times longer because the thread keeps catching and tangling. Come on Singer - I trusted your quality. This machine seems ok to look at but I have had nothing but trouble with two of them! Never again will I buy a Singer sewing machine. By the way I had my last machine for 18 years without any problems. (It was not a Singer.)

Wasn't Happy

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality

21 out of 25 people found this helpful.

I bought this machine as a starter for my granddaughter. From the very first time we started using the machine, the thread was constantly breaking. There were intermittent clunking noises...sometimes it sounded almost normal and sometimes it sounded like it was going to fall apart. Returned the machine and bought another brand for a bit higher price, but it works MUCH better.

Love the buttonholer

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Few Features

7 out of 11 people found this helpful.

I haven't seen the CD yet but I do like this machine. I like the substantial sound of it. It feels quality. I bought it for the buttonholer which is wonderful.
I do miss reverse on all stitches. I do miss having a needle down position when stopping. Being over 65 more light would be nice but I can use an accessory. I will be ordering the walking foot.

My new sewing machine : )

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Complicated, I'm Hands On Learner

6 out of 9 people found this helpful.

I probably should give it 5 stars, because the problem I'm having is really me, I'm sure of it. I'm a visual learner, so I'm struggling without someone that I can talk to, see, touch, and so forth.
I love the light weight machine, I can pick it up and move it around with ease, I love the table extension, so cool! The machine runs very quietly compared to my old machine. I'm just starting to work with the stitches. I've used one decorative stitch for hemming napkins, CUTE!!
My problem is, the reason I bought the machine, I need a button hole machine. This machine has like 4 different kinds. I can't get any of them to work. I think it's just a matter of time and me figuring out. But, I get frustrated way to easily, and have to quit. So, I'll get back to it. I had to watch the DVD 4 times to finally get the automatic threading thing together. So, this just might take me a bit longer. All in all, I'm more than happy. I just miss the days of the singer store, and being able to go visit and call on the phone. My singer tech, was my friend back in the day. Thanks so much

'Sew' Wonderful!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Complicated

The Singer 6199 Brilliance sewing machine is really 'Sew' Wonderful! It's a little complicated at first due to so many different, cool stitches. But once you figure what stitch is best for your project, the rest of it is easy. I would seriously recommend this machine to ANYONE & EVERYONE no matter what their level of sewing experience.

My new favorite machine!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Buttonhole!

8 out of 11 people found this helpful.

After battling with my mother's old White Jeans Machine not being able to sew a zigzag, I made a somewhat impulse buy of this machine. My first experience with an electronic machine...I love it! I love how it sews a perfect buttonhole EVERY time. I love how when I turn the machine on...it's automatically set to sew a straight stitch with a 2.5 length...genius!
It has a little trouble moving multiple layers of quilt-weight cotton forward. Might have to get a walking foot to fix that problem.
I haven't tried all the feet yet, but so far, sewing with this machine makes sewing an absolute joy.
I also love that the foot pedal allows precise control of the speed. The Janome machines at my sewing classes seem to have two speeds...snail and cheetah. I'm seriously considering bringing my Singer to class with me next time!

Ready, Set, Sew

This machine is fantastic! Note, the location of the bobbin is different than it has been for the past 75 years, and it is an improvement. However, the product manager at Singer should have made certain that the product manual better labeled the location on this new location. The thumbnails are inadequate, as it does not indicate the location on machine. Once you find the bobbin, sewing is a pleasure. Easy to use, and you are able to switch stitches in an instant!

Great value for money

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: No Alphabet Embroidery

7 out of 10 people found this helpful.

This machine is easy to use and feature rich! I was looking for a basic sewing machine and found a hard-working gem. Right now I'm teaching my three children how to sew and the machine makes even tight stitches and responds to your every command. It is also quiet.
My next project is cornices!
My old machine, not a Singer, had great embroidery features, that I miss now, but it broke frequently.
I think the machine should offer more embroidery to tempt owners to upgrade.
