Sewing part is good; embroidery has not worked yet.

Overall Rating:

Cons: Expensive, Too Expensive For Such The Sewing Machine Part.

The sewing part works well, and I believe it will be a huge timesaver with all of the automated processes.

However, we have tried unsuccessfully on 4 different computers to upload the software that accompanied the sewing machine for the embroidery element. It is clear that the CD that came with the machine is defective and we were not able to obtain another CD.

NOT HAPPY

My husband bought me the machine without consulting me. I
used it for a couple of months and started having problems with
it. I have sent it to the main repair department twice, once Singer paid for the return, the second time after only 2 months, it cost me $70 to return it, and it came back with a
loud rattle when it is stitching, and still has it because I can't afford to send it back again. I have had numerous problems with the machine. It seems that every project I start, gets ruined before completion and I have to start over, hoping it will go to completion. Needles break often, always have to use stabilizer even on sturdy fabric. Features are good, if they work.....price was good if it works....easy to use when it works....does not live up to the Singer reputation that we knew back when...hope to replace it some day!!!

Not worth the money

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features

Cons: Poor Quality, Unreliable

6 out of 8 people found this helpful.

I have had this machine for almost three years now, and it has given me nothing but trouble since I received it. From day one it had tension issues. After a few months of trying unsuccessfully to get the tension right, I contacted Singer and they had me send it in to be serviced because the timing was messed up. It was still under warranty so that was good, but I still had to pay $60+ to ship it. Then the service lady told me that I needed to ONLY use Singer Needles (not the cheapy ones you can get at Walmart) and I had to use high quality thread. Ok... so I threw out all my cheap thread and used the expensive stuff. After I got my machine back, it STILL had tension issues. I was finally able to get it to work in embroidery mode without breaking the thread, so I decided that this machine would only be used for Embroidery - since that seemed to be the only way I had any luck with it.

Now, even when I'm embroidering, I still have tension issues and the thread breaks at least 20% of the time (mid project of course) and it doesn't alert you that the thread is broken immediately. You cannot walk away from it. I have to sit and watch as it embroiders, so I can hit the stop button if there is an issue before it destroys the fabric.

I waited to write a review for a long time because I really wanted to learn this machine. I was a new sewer when I got it, and I had been using a Brother sewing machine before that, so I thought maybe I was just having a hard time adjusting to all the little differences. No. This machine is not reliable. I can't tell you how many times I've shredded something in the middle of just adding a name to a sewing project. Maybe it's a lemon... but I doubt it. I feel like all of the great reviews tell you how great it is right out of the box. Yes, it has incredible features, and when it works... it works beautifully! But other reviews I've read online that I felt were more accurate were written by people who have had it for a while.

This machine is not worth the money, and I cannot in good faith bring myself to sell it on Ebay for a fraction of what I paid because I know it will just depress another sewer. I'm planning on trading this in when I am ready to purchase a better embroidery machine.

Don't do it!!!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated

4 out of 4 people found this helpful.

Do not invest in this migraine of a machine! I am so disappointed I didn't go with another embroidery sewing/machine. I have had nothing but headaches and stress with this one. It constantly eats thread, breaks needles and the designs don't always read correctly from computer to machine. I have had mine since March and have babied it and today it stopped sewing. It just turned off and now that it decided to come back on it won't thread from the bobbing. This is just the latest issue. I have a Brother that is smaller but so much better. I regret buying Singer and never will again! No matter how much you research and do exactly what everyone suggest along with buying alllllll the recommended items Singer suggest using it is useless. I love crafting but this piece of poop has made it a dreaded chore. I have lost money and patience. Spend a little more and avoid this brand like the plaque until they start offering quality equipment like they have in former years.

Disappointed with the 4X4 hoop

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated

4 out of 4 people found this helpful.

I LOVE my machine when everything is working well. BUT I have YET to get the 4X4 hoop to work. I have tried EVERYTHING and even got hints and helps from the Futura FB group. Someone on there told me that Singer had problems with some of the 4X4 hoops so I have requested a replacement. I will update as I hear back from Singer. Very displeased that I have to use the large hoop for EVERYTHING.

very disappointed in SingerXL 400 Futura

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

Cons: Complicated, Not User Friendly., To Attach Hoop You Have To Lift The Embroidery Foot While Trying To Slide The Hoop Into Place., The Singer Website Should Have Videos Showing How To Operate The Machine.

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

I purchased my Futura XL 400 for myself. The sewing part is great. My experience with the embroidery performance has been very upsetting. The thread breaks, broken needles and just seems to be a real lemon. It is still under warranty but the nearest service center is 2 1/2 hour drive one way. I have to pay shipping fee. If the machine would do everything it is supposed to do it would be awesome. Don't like having to connect to a computer. I had to search internet to seek how to operate machine. I spent three days reading and learning how to embroidery just to be let down with all it's problems.

This machine is my second sewing and embroidery machine, my first was a futrua 150 , I run both of them almost every day, I have them both set up to embroidery, I have yet other singer 6235 machine that I do my sewing on,, besides these three machines I own a singer overlock too, it is professional 5 . Now back to the xl-400, what I like about this machine is the easy bobbin take up of thread, the larger hoop that just slides into the unit, no screws! The multiple hooping too. The easy of using this machine wonderful,

Machine is in the shop for the 4th time. Last repair visit was for a month, picked up 4/15/14 and had to take back 5/6/14. Barely used before it quit. Has been nothing but trouble since day ONE. Due to rotator cup repair i haven't been able to use the machine a lot and STILL IS IN FOR FOURTH REPAIR.

Can't be a real Singer!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use, Great Idea

Cons: Poor Quality, Poor Engineering

I bought from Amazon...1st mistake. Was "like new, still in box" . Lady at sewing machine store said "be careful". Well, I figured a Singer is a Singer...I was wrong! I spend way too much of my sewing time jicking with the machine. The embroidery part is disappointing due to the machine's inconsistencies. Sewing with it is just way too bothersome, but today it totally died. If you want a real embroidery machine, get a Babylock. If you want a sewing machine, buy a Singer Confidence Quilter.

I Love, Love, Love my Singer Futura XL-400

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Has Beautiful Stitches

Cons: Software To Expensive , Alarms When It's Not Needed!

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

I initially bought this machine because I was interested in embroidery and was ready to learn. But then I transferred my interest to quilting somehow and with this machine so far has made it so fun with a few extra pieces that I had to buy along the way it has really been the best investment I have ever made. I love my Singer Futura XL-400, I am so pleased that I bought this model. Although it has it's faults as well I really get very mad at the bobbin and thread alarm it tends to stop and alert when there isn't even a problem almost every time I use it. I have to reset everything and turn the machine off for a few minutes but as far as that I've never had a problem with it. And as far as the embroidery section of the machine it's great as well, but it's kinda plain unless you can invest in the software for it and let me tell you it is very, very expensive too. I did buy the auto punch and love it but it takes some learning, just to be able to use that for sure. It would be great if they had a cheaper style of software. But it's a great machine, I would recommend it to anyone. I love, love, love my singer swing machine!!

Frustrations of a creative sewer

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

I love the features of the XL400 and the relative ease of use, however there have been major issues with error messages. I have taken 2 classes at Joanns learning to use my new machine and both times resulted in sending my machine back for repair. Now, the Viking gallery at Joanns where I purchased the machine has ordered another new machine for me to replace the one that has given us such a problem. The store has been great to deal with and I am looking forward to receiving my new machine

Dissapointment

Overall Rating:

I have been disappointed since I brought this machine home. To begin with, the thread kept breaking. I went to a class and it worked perfectly. I came back home to the same problem. I have heard from others that this model/brand is very bad about this. The tension is not correct. There is no way to adjust the bobbin tension.
Now I finally did finish one design. I wanted it in the small hoop. I put small hoop in the drop down, I showed a small hoop on my computer. It would only let me use a large hoop. OK SO now, I've been trying to put a 3 letter name on a bib. It will only let me use a large hoop. No matter what I try. If I turn everything off, turn it back on, I'm immediately told I need a large hoop even though no design has been selected. This does not make sense to me. If I could get a better more user friendly machine I would!

Great Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

I am a beginner sewer and find this machine very easy to use. The instructions were easy to follow. Being a beginner sewer when I first got the machine I was a bit overwhelmed with everything. But once I dove into it I found it to be user friendly. As a first time embroiderer I love this machine and the ease in which I learned. The speed control is one of my favorite features. My seven year old daughter is learning to sew on it too and this feature comes in very handy. Thank you Singer for a great product.

Passing used/returned/broken off as new?

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated, Expensive

I was so excited to venture into the world of home embroidery. This seemed like the perfect machine. Right out of the box I noticed a small black scratch on top of my machine. No big deal. It's a tiny blemish. I then noticed a missing piece on the front of my machine then thought maybe it was supposed to be that way. (It's not. My friend has the same model.) I hooked up the embroidery arm and found a huge scratch! This machine has been used/serviced/returned before it made its way to my house! Anyway, the thing has severe bobbin and top thread tension issues. It bird nested every project I threw at it. I am NOT pleased at all. I will be returning this pile of parts and buy a Brother!

Love my machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Directions Are Easy To Follow. When My Knots, I Reverse To Back It Up To Where I Left Off.

I had trouble with my XL400 when I first purchased it, was sent off twice for repair. 1st time they said it was the bobbin case, 2nd time bobbin case and out of time. The bobbin case seems to get burrs on it (made of plastic) and the bobbin thread hangs up causing knots on underside of project. Now I check bobbin case for burrs with my handy emory board, takes very little, I am going to order new bobbin case, asked my rep at Viking Sewing Center (who sold me the machine) to order me a couple, but she can't seem to remember to do it. I will do it Myself.,

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Didnt Work!!

The sewing machine did wonderful, but the embroidery machine was horrible and this is why I bought it. It would sew right in the first block and then screw up in the following blocks. Very disappointing. Now Singer says I have to service it because there is nothing to be done with it and there are no singer service centers close. ARGH!!

I bought this machine because of embroidery size, little did I know that it a nightmare to use. I have read the manual 3 times, watch tutorial videos on internet, and still can not embroidery a simple item. I have bought all the recommended supplies and still have problems. I have already replaced needle 4 times. The finish product looks awful. There are either missing stitches or a bird nest of thread on bottom. I am thinking of returning it and trying a different machine.

Sad

Overall Rating:

Pros: Inconsistent Preformance.

Cons: Poor Quality, Poor Quality. Inconstient Preformance.

5 out of 6 people found this helpful.

I am sad. I have had it about 6 months This machine has taken the joy of Christmas projects and turned it into a misery. Constant broken thread warning even when thread not broken. I have read the book and every source of information and every video I can find and have educated myself about the machine and still it does not work right.

The design library designs rarely make it through an embroidery with out breaking two or three needles and with skipped stitches. Tore holes in my fabric. Thread nesting.

It does do nice monograms.
It sews with regular stitches fine most of the time, but not always.

But will not free motion quilt without breaking needle after needle. I went through 20 needles on a baby quilt!!!!! Seriously?

When it works it is great but I spend WAY too much time digging the nests out from under my projects and changing needles . The machine is temperamental. It will run well one day and then the next it is unbelievably frustrating. It is not consistent in any thing it does.

It is inconvenient to clean under the bobbin case. The plate should not have screws that are uncomfortable to get to. The plate should pop off and on easier.

Finding the 2000 needles? OK so singer site itself is out of them? Why? Because we are breaking them faster than they can make them?

If the machine would do the free motion quilting I would be happy and shut up about it , but it won't without breaking thread constantly, breaking needles constantly and beeping broken thread even when it is not broken.

Please if you are considering it, reconsider, I know there are better machines out there without all the headache.

I called singer and was told I have to ship it off for service and I will have to pay shipping.

I will ship it after Christmas and I hope it does the trick, but right now I am a disappointed singer customer. My family has a singer history over generations and I own another singer with no problems. This model appears to have a few lemons floating around out there. If after it ships it still is a piece of crap I will notify the BBB and buy a non singer machine. The thing is Singer Co, this will probably cost you another customer. A customer that will tell everyone who will listen how she got burned by singer and will spend her money elsewhere.

Good product

Overall Rating:

1 out of 2 people found this helpful.

This is a very useful machine for the beginer and the novice sewer. I am on my (2) second machine within 2 months, because of a noise that began in the bober part of machine, the longer I used the machine the louder the noise was. The supplier replaced unit and I am satisfied with product.
Most of accessorys are faily easy to find except for the hoops. With the first machine the hoops were firm holdingof material, with the (2)second unit the hoops dont grip as well. I have looked at local suppliers to purchase different ones and they either can not get them or have to order and takes 6-8 weeks to receive. Is there any other way to go about getting factory supplied parts, quicker,
If any one has an answer can you let me know at jmartin@wvwd.org.
Thank you for any information if you can help!

$2500 paper weight

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality

2 out of 5 people found this helpful.

If the performance of the XL1000 is any indicator of the quality of Singer embroidery/sewing machines then it is safe to say this one is a piece of garbage too. My XL1000 consistently jammed, skipped stitches and broke needles when embroidering. I sent it back to singer for servicing on several occasions and it would work for a while and then start up with the same problems. For a period it would work as a sewing machine and then that broke down too. The last time I sent it in for servicing when Singer sent it back it still didn't work - it would not even sew a straight stitch. I was so disgusted I just covered it and bought a new sewing machine. I advise you to have a backup machine to use while this one is in the repair shop cause it will be in there ALOT. If you want a really expensive paperweight this is the machine for you.

I have had my Futura XL400 for 9 months. I truly enjoy it. Being new to machine embroidery, I have had to learn from the beginning. I bought my singer xl-400 Futura sewing embroidery machine about a month and half ago. I love it!!! It is much faster than than the Brother I had. I have made so many more things with this machine it is incredible. The only thing is no case to protect the machine and also the tension is very touchy. I had it two weeks and I had to get the tension fixed. But all in all I love the machine.

I am a seasoned sewer. I found most items were easy to use and worked really well. I would like to make a suggestion for future models I do a lot of Monogramming and having the bobbin in the front would be a lot easier to change without taking your work from under the needle. Switching from monogram to sewing is very easy. I am happy I made the purchase . I have not tried the Hyper Font yet. I do have thousands of designs this machine convert with no effort.

I'm still on the learning curve. But I think what would help me more than anything would to be able to play on the software without it being hooked up to the machine. I really hate you have to put your computer next to the machine just to work with the software. So for that feature I give you a 1 star. Will give a more detailed evaluation when I get a little better on the machine. Singer change that feature it would help us first timers!!!

Singer XL-400 Review

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

I am so disappointed in the new Singer Futura Machine I purchased less than 6 months ago. I have just had to spend $56 to ship it to the nearest Singer Warranty Repair Service. When I first got the machine it would not work with the version of XP in my computer. I purchased a new laptop with Windows 7. It sewed beautifully for a couple of months. Then I started having problems. I could set it on stitch setting 1 to straight stitch, start sewing and the start/stop button would start blinking. It would change to a different stitch pattern and stop sewing. I owned a Singer Golden Touch & Sew Machine in the 1970s. It was the best machine I ever owned. Since then I have owned machines by other companies. All of them worked much better than the new Singer XL-400 and were much less expensive. I am hoping my new machine will be repaired soon and work properly and restore my faith in the Singer Company.

After continuous problems with hoop error messages, snapped thread, broken needles and occassional, sporadic embroidering, I emailed Singer Customer Service with my problems. I received a response EIGHT days later apologizing and offering to exchange hoops as there was a known problem with the error messages caused by them. I had purchased the Singer as a complement to another brand machine to expedite my Christmas projects, but I spent more time changing needles, rethreading, and wrestling with hoops than I did stitching. I returned the machine exactly SIX days after purchasing and got another machine of the other more reliable brand and luckily got everything I needed done. Overall the machine is inferior to any other brand machine I've ever used and the customer service (EIGHT DAYS TO RESPOND TO AN EMAIL??) is laughable. I can't speak for all Singer products, but I would not recommend this machine.

I like the ease of choosing patterns from my computer, the color charts and being able to reorder colors. I am not as happy with the built in fonts. XL1000 fonts were easier to work with and make a much nicer monogram as well as the size change being easier. I also prefer the way the hoop attached on my XL1000. I would still be using it if the part it needed had been available.

Cons: Big Hoop Sticks And Is Hard To Slide On And Off

I've had my Futura XL400 for about a month and I'm very pleased with it. It is very easy to use if you read the instruction manual and print out the other available manual and read it thoroughly. I use it just for embroidery and I couldn't be more pleased with the performance and outcome of designs. Mine came with additional software: the 3900 Designs and Auto Punch CD's as well as the extra Fonts CD. It was a fabulous value. If one isn't computer literate it might be difficult to use at first. I haven't found any faults except that the big hoop sticks and is difficult to get on and off.

I received my 5 days ago. Two hours after unpacking and setting up, I was embroidering. Wow!! Beautiful stitching. And the sewing uncomplicated and right on. I have used the overlock with great success. Can hardly believe this one sophisticated yet simple to use machine replaces my embroidery, serger and sewing machine. Now, being comfortable with computers and technology, is a distinct advantage. Amazing machine for the price!!

I just wanted to say that I have read quite a few bad reviews on the Futura xl400 and I have to say, patience is what those reviewers need. I have had my moments since getting mine 2 months ago, but I have enjoyed the machine tremendously. It does good quality work and fast. I really like the fact that I can create larger embroidery and that I can create my own designs. The programs are expensive and not easy to learn but I DO love a challenge ????.

My husband bought me the XL400 as a gift after our dog decided to run past my previous machine and launch it across the room breaking it....
I had a couple of weeks learning the different problems and how to surpass them my first issue was the thread ....breaking to the point i was about to give up on it but after changing the thread to ones i purchased via Amazon from Thread Art I have been in dream land enjoying my machine and embroidering away ...my second issue was materials I found using soft and stretchy fabrics didn't work so i went to the slightly harder cottons and stiff satin again this resolved my issues. My settings on designs are Stitch Length 2 stitch width 2, also starting all designs slow before increasing the speed helped me a great deal. I hope this helps anyone else having issues with their machine It really is a dream machine and will do whatever you want it to

The future of Futura! "n_n"

Cons: A Little Noisy, Not For Beginners

At first I was nervous about laying out $700.00 for a machine, but I am glad I did. The Futura is basically as fancy as a Babylock but with out the computer built into the machine, so save yourself $1500.00. It came with over $500.00 worth of software I was really interested in using for myself. I found that the embroidery is most accurate at the slowest speed so resist the urge to be impatient when embroidering complex images. It's not as quiet as I would have liked but that really is no problem when weighed against all of its features. The super silent machines which are just as pricey just didn't have the added uses of the Futura. I have read bad reviews about the software but those reviewers sound lazy or just like to complain, I am well versed in graphic editing software and the programs included with this line of Singers can do very complicated custom designs if you have a little patience. So don't be fooled by the nay sayers. If you are not computer savvy the learning curve may be intimidating but do not fear, look up Jennyssewingstudio on YouTube, she has several free tutorials on the Futura software. She will take you through every step to create what you need. It is easy once you get the hang of it so don't be discouraged. You can create some amazing custom embroidery designs to personalize everything in your home, I would recommend this machine to anyone.

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, High Quality, So Much Fun!

Cons: Have To Be Teathered To The Machine..., Would Love A Larger Hoop.

I really do love my Futura XL-400, I received it as a present from my husband for my birthday! It is the first embroidery machine I have ever owned and I have found it a bit frustrating trying to set up and multihoop designs. I also have a problem with being locked in my sewing room while setting up designs! I too have experienced the thread breakage messages with no breakage found.
Now for the good things! The designs I have made have been beautiful! I started with hankies for my dad and dish towels for my sisters and am now going on to more intense designs and fabrics....I can't wait to try a multi-hoop project! I love my machine and it has been fairly good to me so far! I love changing colors and seeing how the pattern turns out! I have the additional software and have not even loaded it...that's next! Still Learning!

I have owned this machine for about 5 weeks and am pleased with the improvements Singer has made with the Futura since the CE releases. Threading is less of a burden and the larger embroidery size is a big plus. I have yet to multi-hoop but I think you could still use larger hooping capability.
The value of Singer embroidery machines can't be beat. You would have to spend a lot more to get the same with many of the other names out there.

Love My XL-400

Overall Rating:

3 out of 5 people found this helpful.

Prior to purchasing this XL400 - I had purchased a Futura Quartet 4 in 1 and had problems with it from day one - It finally locked up totally and had to ship it to factory for repair. Missed not being able to sew and bought this XL-400. I now have the CE350 back and it is working MUCH better. I knew it wasn't right from the day I first sewed with it - Singer stood behind it and it is working great.

My newer XL-400 works like a charm - I love it also now just have to find a way to use both at the same time!

The only problem I have, and by reading the reviews here others are having also, is the options software will not stayed installed. As soon as the USB is disconnected and the machine turned off - the options software is gone and you have to reinstall it each time you need it. Wish Singer would solve this issue.....please!

Would highly recommend this XL-400 to anyone!

My husband gave me this machine for Christmas, I am new to machine embroidery so I have nothing to compare with. I agree with most of the reviews that Singer needs to make larger hoops. The multihooping is a little confusing, but with larger hoops you would not need to multihoop. I feel that the software should either come with the machine or better priced that people can afford it.

I love my Futura XL-400, but I don't like the fact that it is so difficult to get the software programs that don't come with it. I also am very unhappy with the so-called support website. The amount of support that they don't have on the site is frustrating. It isn't that hard in this day and age to create an effective support site that is usefull to their customers. This is the second Futura that I have purchased in the past 5 years and they have not really updated their website in that time. I have no Singer shops close to my home, so I rely on web supprt.

I purchased the futura because I wanted the options of both sewing and embroidery. This is my first machine ever and I have been so pleased with my experience. I think the book is very helpful considering I knew nothing about a sewing machine when I began. The embroidery machine is so much fun! The Singer store I purchased from offered a class on the embroidery side which I feel I couldn't have done without. It does require knowledge of computer. Overall, I am so happy with my singer and think it's well worth the price.
The only thing I would suggest to Singer is to make a hoop size that's in between the small and large. I know I would definitely purchase it!

I purchased this machine for it's embroidery machine capabilities. It does a good job on the embroidery but it is a little tricky on how it is set up with your computer. I have had trouble with software showing that there are updates available but it will not connect to the web to get them. I have called Singer several times and had long wait times. My retailer finally got in touch with them and she said their are really no update for this machine or it's software yet. I find that a little confusing.
It does not have as many decorative stitches as some other machines and only comes with a limited software. If you want to create your own embroidery designs you will have purchase additional software.

I am new to embroidery but have been monograming and other embroidery once I learned all about stablizers, thread, needles etc and love it. Wish there had been more in manual about the embroidery functions had to use youtube videos and buy several books to learn more about the basics to it. Have bought different types of thread that was recommended and put tension on E for embroidery but still have lots of problems with thread breaking. My main concerns however are as follows software never seems to be able to update or there or no updates. Have all the software packages and have added the fonts package and cross stich package but they keep disappearing and keep having to reload them I guess you can never reboot your pc again if you do not not want to reload software. Software is also limited cannot work on designs unless it is connected to machine which is awkward. Machine seems to be cheaply made handle for threader keeps falling off and threader is harder to use then some of the cheaper model singers. Embroidery unit hoops seem hard to get in and out and have to hold unit so it doesnt move. Now my entire embroidery unit will not work/reset it is froze and have error 10 when unit connected and have had machine a little over 30 days or I would return. So for now all I have is an expensive sewing machine and bought the machine specifically for its embroidery function. Before embroidery unit quit working basically loved the machine and figured I would work around all the finicky little problems

This was a gift from my children at Christmas. I have been embroidering for many years. I find putting the embroidery hoops on difficult. Three hands are needed. There needs to be a larger selection of hoop sizes. The update states there is a corrupt file . The sewing machine will work properly. Paperwork included in machine says "they" are there for you but try to get someone to answer the phone. It does sew good. It would also be nice to have the instruction manual in one place. Either on line or all in the instructional manual included. Gets confusing flipping from place to place.

I have used this machine quite a bit for embroidery so far. I am very happy with the results. I have not found anything that I would consider a serious drawback. I think that it would have been nice if a complete set of software were included. Like AUTO-PUNCH and so forth. However, what comes with the machine, will get you embroidering. The machine does need an additional hoop, 5x7 hoop will save you a lot of stabilizer. It's a great buy.

I have only owned this machine for about 1 month. I have had three other machines, Viking, Brother, Babylock. The reason I purchased this machine is because it has the capability to embroider several different design formats, not just one (which is usually the machine brand). I do have an editing software program that would convert designs to stitch out on my brand machine. The designs I already have, do not need to be converted, this is a BIG PLUS with my Futura. I only use it for embroidery, it has done beautiful stitching. My one complaint is : This machine really should come with a Medium size hoop. Singer get on the ball and make a Medium Hoop option for us. Create an update for the software, offer it to us, I'll bet you will be surprised at how fast they will sell !!! The price point is great for beginning sewers, or those of us who don't want an "electronic wonder" and it gets the job done. The women who own/owned the previous 100 & 200 series proved to me that your creativity is not limited by the "lack of" bells & whistles other machines have and cost 1,000's.
Overall I am very pleased with my XL400. Eventually I will add a couple more software options, for those who wish this had a serging option ? my recommendation is buy a Serger, I own a Singer Serger, would not live without that either. I really would like to say also, for those new to this machine. Follow your manual, watch the tutorials offered on You Tube Singer, join a Futura group, in my area there isn't any support, all of these options I listed really made me feel like I was not alone when I did need to have a question answered.Happy Sewing !!!

Much easier to use than the CE 200. No tangles problems this time, threading system better, and having a larger frame, that is so much easier to attach is a bonus. Only problem area is that stitching continues for a while after bobbin runs out before it stops, so need to back track a bit. Lines up easily after removing hoop and reattaching though, unlike the 200.
Overall, a much better machine than the 200.I am very happy with it, having used it for a few weeks now.

large hoop still not large enough

Overall Rating:

Pros: Swift Smart Threading, Drop And Sew Bobbin, Multi-hooping Capabiity, Usb Connection

Cons: Loud, Autopunch And Editing Not Included, Unreliable Automatic Threader, Unreliable Notice For Thread Breaks

87 out of 98 people found this helpful.

I wanted to make sure I owned this machine long enough to give it an accurate review. I've had it long enough to want to return it, but won't. It has frustrated me to tears. The large hoop is just not large enough. I am making a quilt, putting some redwork into each block instead of stippling it. But I can't do it. I've spent hours on end just trying to line up the first block and finally have given up. My blocks are 9.5 by 11 inches. I wanted to frame each design that I already have in each block with a border. I have to multihoop in order to do that because I need just a couple more inches to cover the entire block. But I can't even line up the hoop evenly on the quilt. So what good is multihooping when it's too difficult to line it up perfectly? Just make a larger hoop for it and the capability to add different sized hoops and this would be a decent machine. Some sort of clear vinyl template would be helpful.

Okay, now that I'm done venting, here are the pros and cons.
Pros:
---> Swift smart threading system makes it a breeze to thread.
---> I love the drop and sew bobbin feature, too.
---> I like the snap on hoops, rather than the ones you have to screw in, like for the CE250.
---> I like the multi-hoop capability, but wish it was easier to line up. This and the larger hoop were the reasons I sold my CE250 and bought this one instead.
---> The automatic needle threader is a good idea, but I like the one on the CE250 better. It seemed to work a lot better. This one is very picky. I'm lucky to get it on the third try. You have to practically put the thread into the little catcher thing, straining your eyes doing it which defeats the purpose of an automatic threader. Also, make sure your needle is in correctly. The CE250 wouldn't even let you put it in wrong. So when I first got the XL400, I put the needle in which ever way it allowed me to, which was the wrong way. So the automatic threader wouldn't work at all. Some pressure feet wouldn't work, either. I finally had a lightbulb come on and realized that I might have the needle in wrong.
---> Strange as it is, my favorite feature on the XL400 is the speed control.

Now for the cons:
---> Editing and autopunch software doesn't come with the basic software as it did with the CE250. You have to purchase it separate and it's quite expensive. It isn't compatible with the CE250 software, so if you already have all the software from CE250, it still won't work with it. You have to repurchase it. I use a free program for my editing.
---> It is very clanky and loud when the hoop moves. I wish it was quieter.
---> A feature that would really improve this, other than the above mentioned, would be an automatic thread cutter, as the Quantum Stylist 9960 has. Otherwise, you are wasting a lot of thread because you have to pull the entire hoop off before you can cut it. So if you are taking it off just to check the bobbin, you have to either rewind the bobbin to save that thread that you have just pulled up, or you waste it.
---> The XL400 is not very reliable for it's messages about broken thread. It beebs at me constantly when there is no thread break. I have a thread net and spool cap for my thread, which used to fix the problem with my CE250, but it doesn't seem to make much difference with the XL400. When it is not even close to running out of bobbin thread, it will beep, but when I completely run out of bobbin thread or the top thread breaks, it doesn't beep until after at least 8 stitches have past after the break, and you can't go back to fix that unless you do it manually. So I have a bald spot on a person I embroidered.

Overall, the machine is pretty nice. Other than the above problems mentioned, this would be the perfect machine, within this price range.

I hope my review has been helpful.

I chose this machine because of its ability to multi-function. It does amazing embroidery, as well as heavy upholstery. How often can you say that about one machine. I have always used multiple machines in the past, but with this one I can do it all and now have more room for material storage! Totally amazing machine!

I have had my machine for about 3 weeks. I just love it. My kids keep coming up with more and more for me to do. It is not hard to learn, easy to use, and so much fun.

Bobbin Problems

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Bobbin Issue

I bought this machine about 3 weeks ago. Had to go back to the store to get the tools and instruction manual. Kept having issues with the bobbin hanging up, stopping, breaking and now, three weeks old, it has finally stopped working all together. I'm hoping the store will just exchange it because I'm not looking forward to having to submit it for repairs. When it worked, it worked great. I would like to keep the same type of machine, just want one that works.

I can't say enough great things about this machine! I upgraded to this machine from my first embroidery machine that was quite basic. I couldn't be more pleased with the features of the Futura. I have an online children's clothing store and use my machine every day. I was mainly looking for a larger hoop size (my old machine would only do a 4x4 area and I had clearly outgrown it!) and ease of use. I got that and much more with the new machine. It is very easy to use and stitches beautifully! I had no trouble setting it up using the manual and starting to embroider/sew right away and I haven't slowed down since. Thanks Singer, for putting out quality, user-friendly machines!

Great product for the money!

I've been using this machine for about a month now, and I am very happy with its performance for the money I spent. The only real complaint I would have is that it wants me to use the larger hoop for almost all projects, when a lot of my designs should actually fit in the smaller hoop. Don't know what the deal is there. On the whole, it is easy to use, and the quality of the embroidery it produces is above average. I was disappointed to learn that I am going to have to purchase about another $600 worth of software to do some of the things that I want to do, but the machine has plenty of other features to keep me busy for awhile. I am very happy to have purchased this product.

xl-400

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Needle Threader Sticks On Xl-400

I love this machine however I wish a medium size hoop was available with this machine. I have done several embroidery patterns that you need a medium hoop for. I do also own the CE-150 which I also love. I have had a problem with the automatic needle threader sticking on my XL-400. I would recommend a Singer every time. They are so easy to learn.

I love this machine and highly recommend it. This machine does it all. It sews beautifully as well as embroidery. This is my first embroidery machine and it was so easy to use. The software is super user friendly and the machine embroiders without any real effort on my part. The threading system is fool proof. I have had singers for more than 25 years and as always, they never dissappoint.

This is a fantasic machine. The XL400 is the second Futura embriodery/ sewing machine I have owned. I recently upgraded and am very happy about my choice. From the Swift Smart Threading system and the speed control on the embroidery stitching..its # 1. One big improvement I enjoy in the XL 400 is not having to disengage the embroidery unit to wind thread on the bobbin...Thank You Singer!! its a wonderful feature. The program is so easy to use, the new copy/paste feature is a dream with being able to intergrate designs. This feature is better then an editing program. I could go on and on...a very happy customer here.

No Disappointments!

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Large Hoop Area

My sewing machine (no embroidery functions) needed yearly cleaning and I was offered a very expensive embroidery machine as a loaner and fell in love with embroidery in just three weeks. The loaner was way out of my budget and I was sick knowing I had to give it back. I researched and tested several brands of embroidery machines but they were all still over my budget and the hoop size was way to small for the price. Then I found the XL-400. I was very hesitant to buy. It just sounded too good to be true...large hoop area and great afforable price. Overall, I like this machine better than the thousand of dollars loaner I had. The reason is the ease of working with the designs. It is so easy to center a design or move it anywhere you want it. There was no learning curve with the software as I use my own computer that I already know and it embroiders beautifully. I purchased designs to use on the loaner that I thought I would never use again with a machine I could afford based on their size. I was wrong, the XL-400 just took right off with them. I really love this machine. Patience is needed to start out with. I found my thread breaking several times on my third or fouth design. I thought, oh no, here we go, should not have bought. I e-mailed customer service and received a response right back with helpful information but I found my thread was too old. Changed to the same type of thread but a lot newer and it worked fine. No more breaks and on the advice of customer service changed the needle to a new one too. Thank for making embroidery available to me with an affordable machine that will sew right with the big ($) machines!

Best embroidery machine!!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Large Embroidery Area

This embroidery machine was purchased after I made a Memory Quilt. The machine I already had did not have a font large enough for the quilt. I couldn't have made a better choice. The large embroidery area is one of the best features. I have had so much fun embroidering towels, canvas bags, jackets and of course quilts. Now if you could make a Singer Sewing Machine Trolley case that will fit the Futura 400XL, that's my next purchase.

Awesome machine!!!

This machine is awesome! Though I have only been sewing a few months, I wanted to learn to embroider also. It is extremely user friendly for those who are computer savvy. The only issue I have is that you cannot use the software with the machine attached. It would be great if I could work on a design anywhere on my laptop then connect the futura once I am ready to send the design to be stitched. Still a great product.
