I would not really recommend a beginner try this machine at home alone as the manual is not step-by-step enough for a beginner. I am a Singer enthusiast, own several vintage Singers, and I really feel that is why I have been able to get excellent results with my Talent 3321. It's a great little machine but getting a good stitch with it was easier because I've sewn on so many different Singers. I knew, for example, that I needed to use the L-screwdriver when changing needles, and that I needed to try all of the stitches on a scrap to figure out what settings were needed to get the stitch I wanted. I will say this little machine sews the nicest stretch stitches and it is very simple to achieve those. The straight stitches are also very nice, something I've not always seen with machines that have both stitch types. The only reason I am not giving this a full five star rating is the manual-it doesn't give sufficient information on setting the stitches. If you buy this machine, and I do recommend it as a wonderful basic machine, make sure you practice with scraps, and take notes right into the manual for future sewing reference. The machine is not as light and jumpy as other reviews here and elsewhere have reported, I deliberately ran it at high speed in several settings and it sat quietly on the sewing table. The bobbin does click a bit whilst sewing but slowing down settles that. Bigger than it looks in the pics, too.
Fairly easy to use, nice stitches, easy to thread. Could be quieter, not really heavy enough as it likes to jump around a little when sewing at fastest speed.
I purchased this machine for an immediate need without comparison shopping, and was very pleased with its performance. I agree that it could be a bit heavier, but it was easy to use and a great value for money!
I hardly ever sew, but this machine makes it much less daunting! My only complaint would be that the foot pedal is rather light. Otherwise, I think it has been a good purchase.
I purchased this machine to do simple piecing at my quilt guild charity sews.
The machine sounded like it broke a shaft one weekend during the sew. All the ladies were shocked just as I. I am so disappointed. The machine was only 8 months old. When I contacted Singer they stated I would need to take it to a certified Singer repair shop. The closest one is 6 hours away. To ship it would cost more than half of the value of the machine. So you got it. I am going to trash it. Such a shame. I love Singer but the new machine I bought is a Brother. Please be careful using this machine. It can't handle anything but simple two pieces of material sewed together.

I am a complete beginner. In February I took a free 2-hour sewing machine class at my local library, and then in March my 2nd grader had a Book Character assignment at school and decided to be Willy Wonka. I wanted to make him a lined purple paisley vest from a pattern and so I bought this machine. The vest turned out beautifully! I agree that the manual leaves a lot to be desired, but you can overcome that with diligence. I'm the type of person that makes pages of notes and questions and reads all the directions several times before starting a project. I googled a lot of my questions and asked some experienced friends a few things, and the DVD that comes with the machine was very helpful too. Next I'm going to make some sweatpants for my 5-year old and look forward to learning to use the stretch stitches with knit fabric. I can't wait!!
