Easy To Use

I've had my machine for 6 months now and all of the sudden the alignment is off. I haven't used it very much (as I have another machine) or used any heavy duty materials either. I used it maximum of 8 times. Unfortunately it was a gift and I didn't recieve the reciept so I'll be paying $30 for the repair.

Good Value, Great Features
Jams Easily

I have grown to love this machine but not until after going through the pain barrier with it.

The first pain was the threading. I wish that the pictures could have been a bit clearer and from more angles. But I'm over that now and can thread with relative ease.

The most frustrating thing about this machine is that unless you are very careful how the thread lies in relation to the needle after it's been threaded and the needle lowered into the fabric it will constantly jam up on you. However now that I have sussed it out its great and does it's job well. The back stitcher on the other hand - if just don't use it due to its temperamentally.

Stick with you machine and get to know it very well and it will give you trouble free basic sewing.

Adjusting The Tension Is A Problem

I bought this machine two months ago and since then I'm having problems in adjusting the tension on this machine. I'm totally upset about this. From day one this was the problem. I'm struggling to adjust the tension. Can you help?

Product Is Defective

Singer has been a part of my life since I can remember. It's the only sewing machine brand my grandmother, mother and I have ever used. I purchased my very first singer when my first daughter was born in 1977. It's still going strong, but my second daughter decided a couple of years ago that she wanted to learn to sew. She learned quickly, loved it, and kept my machine.

So when my 14 year old granddaughter said she wanted to learn to sew, I purchased a 1409 Promise, because it was basic and inexpensive in case she didn't stick with it.

Things didn't work out and I ended up keeping the machine. The first thing I didn't like was the way the bobbin is inserted. Until you get used to it, it's easy to miss and falls out. The old fashioned drop-in bobbin worked so well, why change it?

But my biggest complaint is one that seems to be shared by many -- the bobbin thread gets tangled up often and this has become very frustrating. It's not a problem with the tension, stitch length or needle, because it will work well for a while, then without warning the thread tangles and breaks. I have NEVER had this problem before. Clearly this is a defect in the machine, since I am not the only one with this issue. I'm very glad I did not get a chance to teach my granddaughter to sew, as I would've left the machine with her and she would have given up. She lives in another state and her mother doesn't sew, so there would have been no one to tell her the problem is with the machine.

I'm not giving up on Singer, but next time I won't think I'm doing something wrong and wait until it's too late to return the machine.
