I purchased this Singer professional 5 five thread serger sewing machine about four months ago and have not been able to use it yet because the threading is so difficult, and the thread keeps breaking. I think that the only way to solve this problem is for Singer to release a DVD with someone demonstrating all of the threading options so that we would be able to see what to do. I have printed the CD manual but have found that it is just as blurry on CD as it is on paper. Singer please release a instruction DVD for those of us who are having a VERY hard time getting to use this machine!

I am quite dissappointed with this machine. it looked so easy to operate on tv. I can understand the threading instructions. i have had a serger before and know how to thread, but this is very complicated. th cd that came with it does nnot work. I need a visual with the instructons. I am very disa ppointed.

I purchased this on HSN this month and am very pleased with it- I love all the features for the price point-similar sergers from other companies are 2x as much.
-threading took a little time to learn but once I got it.. no problem--since I have had another serger from another company in the past- I did not feel intimidated by the threading- and for the price point I don't mind that the threading takes a little time.
- I have seen some reviews on HSN that were negative-especially related to the threading -but I think that they probably did not print the CD instructions and sit down and go through them step by step.
- I would advise users to print the CD instructions... and go through all of them step by step - I did it in a day and was able to achieve each stitch.
-thanks singer for this serger!!

My Dream Machine!!!!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Wanted a serger forever--when you want something bad enough you make yourself learn it and that's what I did. The price I paid made this sturdy 'do it all' serger a dream come true for me. I'm a novice but thought the instruction manual (more than the CD) did a good job of teaching me this machine. I read, highlighted, followed along and figured it out! Now I think it's easy to thread and it sergers beautifully! Don't give up learning how to use this because comparable 'do it all' sergers can cost a fortune! This one is sturdy, easy and fun! Take a class or get someone to help you if you must because you will love this machine and all it can do!!! I also recommend the books Singer's 'The New Sewing with a Serger' and "The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide' to help you take full advantage of serging with this awesome machine. Reading a camera manual alone does not make someone a photographer and is why I believe it's important to read more than just a serger instruction manual. Read other serger sewing books in order to understand all the 'possibilities that are possible' with an awesome machine like this Singer 5 thread! So many fantastic threads you can use on a serger that you can't on a regular sewing machine which make things you sew incredibly beautiful! Edged a bridal veil with matellic pearlized thread--totally gorgeous! I am in love with this machine!!!

Okay I was a little intimidated when I first got this machine, I unpacked it then repacked it... I finally played with it and printed out my manual and tried out many stitches/locks. WOW! It has made my finishes look so professional and beautiful. No more scantly off garments, home decor or items. Everything that comes through this baby is professional looking quality. The stitches are so beautiful and its extremely fast. I sewed out a stitched reference chart of the included stitches/locks to make it easier to refer back to my setting on this machine. Love, love, love it. The auto-tension and optional adjust-ability is exceptional. Singer has taken a major leap forward and is producing top quality products with our economy and our pockets in mind, as they give us features that other brands charge a lot for. Singer started the sewing revolution and continues to be the leader. No more excuses to not make our own trendy, fashionable clothing, chic home decor, and timeless quilt treasures with all of the Singer products that are available. Singer your rock, Great job!

I have a 4 thread from another mfg. Good machine, but limited. This machine is fabulous. It stitches beautifully, is easy to thread and does all the stitches you could want from a serger. I have not had it long, but I constantly read the instruction booklet and review the cd, for my own satisfaction. This was a very wise purchase.

Another great Singer product

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Clean , Precise Stitching

13 out of 14 people found this helpful.

I love this serger. I bought it to replace a 4 thread serger I had, because I wanted the cover stitch functions and a tighter all-in-one seam and overcast combination stitch. More than one salesman told me to buy a separate coverstitch machine; I don't have the space in my workroom for a machine that only does one thing. The threading was a bit of a challenge at first, but I printed the manual and worked my way through each stitch one by one and put samples in a workbook. It just takes some practice, just like using any other new piece of euipment. The serger sews like a dream...it's smooth, quiet and precise. I use it more than the one I had and find myself looking for excuses to sew what ever I have with just the serger...which it will do, just fine. The results are professional looking and very clean. My only regret is that I waited so long to get this one. I looked at other brands, but Singer never fails to deliver the goods. I have another Singer sewing machine that I bought in the 70's...still going strong.

Handy Dandy Multi-use Serger!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use, Great Workbook Overall.

Cons: Expensive, Workbook Should Include Some Very Necessary Tips.

11 out of 14 people found this helpful.

Purchased this about a month ago. As previous reviewer said, definitely set up and try all stitches first to familiarize yourself. The CD workbook is also conveniently on Singer's website. Print it out! It will be your best friend. Some people say sergers are hard to thread-I just don't see it. This is my first serger and I had no problem threading with the help of the workbook and color-coded dots. Some tips, like the 'pop' trick for breaking the thread at end of cover hems, since you can't chain off, should be in the workbook, but the nice lady at the Singer Education Dept. can help. Bit pricey, but figure out how much it would cost to buy a 5-thread serger AND a coverstitch machine and it doesn't seem so bad. Would have given 5 stars if it was a tad lower in price.
Overall, great serger - easy to use and LOTS of functions.

Took awhile but now its great

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Complicated, Threading Is A Nightmare In Beginning

9 out of 11 people found this helpful.

I bought this serger online. We have no sewing places close. When I got it I thought how hard can this be? I have a sewing and embroidery machine and have very good luck with them. I know it came threaded but, I did not leave it that way so I spent 6 hours trying to get it rethreaded. The lower looper was my worst nightmare. If you follow the directions exactly you will get it. I was ready to give it away but now I love it. Its sews quickly and seams are finished nicely. I have never used a serger before so maybe I would have had some idea about the threading. Im just saying buy this serger and don't give up its so worth the effort to learn it..

Love my Singer serger

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, High Quality

9 out of 11 people found this helpful.

I was so pleased to find this serger with all the features (cover hem, chain stitch, etc.) for an excellent price <$500.00. This is my first serger, so I was a little intimidated at first, but after reading the small instruction manual that came with the machine I was quickly threading it with the 3 thread overlock and sewing my first practice piece. There is a CD that comes with the machine that is invaluable for learning this machine. It goes over each stitch, shows all the proper settings, how to thread the machine, uses for the stitch. You do have to print it out from your computer. It prints out to be a LARGE, detailed, comprehensive manual. I am just so happy to have this machine. The closest price one with the cover hem was HUNDREDS of dollars more. This machine is really NOT that complicated IF you read the instructions and follow all the steps shown. Thank you so much, Singer, for making such a great product with so many features, and making it affordable.

Amazing coverstitch/chainstitch machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

9 out of 11 people found this helpful.

I did not think a little machine as the P5 could be so powerful and versatile. The first week I found myself staring at it, uncovered and placed the cover back on. Looked complex and the threading imagined tedious to say the least, but I was wrong. This machine is so easy to use and thread. After carefully reading the manual, my confidence was back. I find myself, changing threads, changing dials with such ease. I am so happy with the way my husband's t-shirts look and the sweat pants for my grandson as well, and indeed getting professional finishes on my garments, I just love it. The printable cd is an amazing tool.

Impressed and Delighted!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: None That I've Experienced

9 out of 11 people found this helpful.

I did a lot of research before buying this Singer and I'm so glad I followed my intuition. I was a bit apprehensive due to so many expressing frustration with the threading, but in my research I found many people who loved this machine and many who were just as frustrated with other brands when it came to threading. Also many who had the high-end 5 thread machines were unhappy with the coverstitch stitches and disliked the switching back and forth. From those who loved this machine that particular issue wasn't mentioned, so I bought the Singer. If you want easy threading go with Babylock - it only costs about 4-5 times as much as the Singer!! I am completely new to serging and I was able to thread the machine correctly the first time! The workbook is invaluable and the photos can be enlarged on my pc for viewing, which made it easier. After sewing my first sample, I was totally in love with this machine. It is quiet, the stitch quality is excellent and the features and possibilities with this machine are impressive. I am taking a couple of on-line serger classes from Craftsy. I know this will help me get the most out of my new serger. I bought a serger because I wanted the ability to make beautiful garments and I believe this serger will make all the difference. The machine is well made and purrs like a kitten when running. For those who think the threading is complicated, I don't think that is exclusive to this wonderful machine. It does take some patience and practice as all new machines do. When I bought my sewing machine (Bernina) I was required to take classes on how to use it. If one is having trouble threading this machine my advice is don't give up. If I can do it anyone can. I found it helpful to have a flashlight on hand as well as some magnifying glasses. Once I could see everything inside, the directions became crystal clear. I also bought thread in the same colors of the different thread paths, so that if I didn't have good stitches I would be able find just where I messed up. But so far, I have had nothing but perfect stitches. I am working my way through the workbook which will become a handy reference for me in the future. I am sold on this serger and love it. To those expressing frustration I encourage you to try it again, just go slow and once you get it threaded that first time, you will be as impressed as I am with the quality of this well-designed machine.

I purchased this machine to replace an old serger. What a difference!! It is much easier to thread. I see some folks have issues. They need to learn top, bottom, right ,left. (Upper looper, lower, right needle, left) always thread in that order and it will stitch perfectly. The workbook is a nice reference for a machine that has so many stitches. I stitched each and stapled the sample to each chapter cover. Having a cover stitch without purchasing another machine is wonderful. All in all, it is a powerful, quiet machine, handles all fabrics nicely and is a great machine for the money. There are also many uTube video tutorials on this machine which is nice.

I wanted a serger that was a step up from the one I had. It was ancient and in need of some TLC. I was tired of the difficult threading process. It was constantly breaking threads. Taking it in to repair would cost as much as replacing it. So I went looking for a new one. I truthfully did not realize just how much of a jump in stepping up when purchasing the 14T968DC until I received it. I took my time going through the instruction book and the PDF files on the CD. The only obstacle that set me back some time was the upper and lower "V cutout". It was foreign to me but once I got past this I was in serger heaven. I escalated easily in using the serger from threading it to critiquing the stitches to exactly what I need. No holding back. Working on a project now and I am looking forward finishing it so I can try out some fancy stitches with yarn, ribbon and crochet cotton.

The 5 thread serger is more than I ever expected. I had a 4 thread of another brand for about 7 years and wanted a 5 thread. This serger has the quality stitching of a much more expensive brand and each time I use it I love it even more.

I have six Singer machines! I love tham all, but this surger is a dud! It has to go! The manual is useless! Threading it is very difficult. Even YouTube videos illustrate frustration. Unfortunately I bought it on HSN. There is NO support. This monster is going back! I will buy locally from now on. Our sewing shop offers free classes! Why didn't you make an instructional video?

Disappointed Again

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality

7 out of 13 people found this helpful.

I purchased this machine about six months ago and am very disappointed. Singer supposed to be the best sewing machine maker, unfortunately this is my second disappointing purchase. From my personal experience I don’t think they make good machines any longer.

I bought the server six month ago but have not been able to use it yet because the thread tension does not work at all, which supposed to be set automatically by selecting Auto tension dial letter The stitches are coming out loose even after you try to adjust the tension manually. In addition to that the tension does not stay the same. You could start your stitch and by the time you get to the end the tension would come looser and looser. The knifes included with the machine are dull, they chewing the fabric instead of cutting. It also impossible to pull the fabric out at the end of sewing. You have to open the lopper cover and untangle the threads with the tweezers.

Off course I am stuck with this garbage now because it has been more then 90 days since the purchase. When I called their Consumer Affairs they pretty much tolled me that Singer cannot guarantee their product will work more than 90 days. In my case it did not work from the first day, I just wasn't able to test it right away. Don't make the same mistake. Stay away from Singer machines if you don't want waisting time and money. They save their money by making their products cheaper in Taiwan and we here in US getting screwed. What a shame.

This serger is an Excellent machine. I enjoy using it and creating elegant garments and costumes.
It does everything!
The only wishes: I would love self threading, but threading is not that bad.
At times I find it very frustrating going through heavy or layers of fabric.
However, I love SINGER and enjoy using them.
Singer has the best and is the best.

What a awesome serger. I struggled with the threading at first but, after getting over my fear it is really easy to thread. The sewing is perfect and I look forward to making things with it. I hope to learn the rest of the stitches using the feet very soon. The more I use it the easier it gets. I would recommend this serger highly.

I LOVE this serger. Singer did an awesome job. I have been waiting for a serger that combined both serging stitch types (overlock and chain), without costing me a fortune. This is IT. Yes, it may take a little practice learning to thread the loopers, but do you really want to pay the price difference of another brand? It's really easy once you follow the directions closely. I recommend taking advantage of the free workbook download Singer offers on their website to accompany the user manual. Yes, free workbook another brand charges you another small fortune for their workbook after you've already taken out a second mortgage to buy their serger. I can't say enough good about Singer products. Singer is all I have in my sewing room. (No, I don't work for Singer, but wish I did.)

I purchased this machine thinking it would make my sewing life even more rewarding...instead, it has really made me question myself and my sewing ability. I have spent countless hours just trying to thread the machine. The DVD that I got with the machine was not clear and the instructions on the website were even less helpful. I viewed youtube videoes, called local fabric stores, even contacted authorized dealer in my area (all wanted a fee to teach me how to use a machine that I paid almost $700 for...I think that is a bit much to ask of your customers Singer!)since it was represented as an easy machine to use that would give professional results...NOT, because you can't even get the basics...getting it threaded! Singer please either find a better tutorial method, or revamp the machine. I am not new to sewing or serger for that matter, but I would not recommend this to my worst enemy! Again, I can't even get it threaded to give this product a real review. I will be putting it on craigslist since I cannot return it. A CLEAR MISS SINGER COMPANY!

I purchase this serger last year sometime from HSN, and as of today 03/08/2013 I have not be able to use this machine because it is very difficult to thread so I just gave up and continue to used my old serger. I did recently discover a couple of videos on Youtube made my Vince Arcuri which I think may help me. I am very dissapointed that Singer has not put out a DVD on how to use and most important how to thread this machine. I can see that there is quite a bit of frustration from other customers who also purchase this Serger. Please Singer listen to us a put together a DVD for us on this Serger!!!! I would send this machine b
ack to HSN if it wasn't that I kept it to long...

Singer should consider offering the instructional cd in a tutorial format. Even after I printed the instructions out, I found it to be very complicated. I bought this serger because I thought it would be a good value, and offered several features that I wanted, as well as the extra feet. I did not find any support from the retailers employees, as none of them had this machine or could offer me any instructions or advice on the operation of this serger. My vocation led me away from sewing soon after I purchased it. Recently I have been fortunate to return to my love of sewing for profit and pleasure, but I find this machine to be discouraging and will sell it and try another brand. I feel like Singer has let me down in the instructions and simplicity of ease at the machine, as well as support from the supplier.

I like what it can do, but , boy do you have to be patient. Didn't realize allen screws came out and still trying to get replacements. Manual is not clear enough on threading. I had a 4- thread serger for 30 years and when it broke I thought I'd upgrade to the 5-thread--big mistake. The pictures need to be closer up and better in showing the threading. I have never used a Serger before and I did not know where to start; I wish it would have come with an instructional video and the manual. Overall, I am very satisfied with the product, but I am giving the product 4 starts because the manual needs steps to follow instructions after you receive the machine, and my machine did not have all the colors marking to tread the loopers.

So glad I purchased the Professional 5. Love the different stitches and cover stitch feature. Best price on the market for a do it all serger. Once you learn to thread it you are on your way. Great threading instruction can be found on the internet showing you every little detail. Auto tension is great! I almost never have to change the setting. Highly recommend the Professional 5 for any home sewer. Singer needs to step up their training and demos on their site. No support for the additional feet that come with the machine,

Versatile Serger

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, Excellent User Manual

Cons: Complicated, Plastic Tabs On Knife/plate Covers Are Not Very Sturdy

This is my second serger & the first one with 5 spools. It is not hard to thread, although it is important to follow the sequence. My only complaints is the plastic tab on the knife cover & flat plate cover are not sturdy. After only 18 months, the tab on the knife cover broke off and I am having trouble replacing it. I was told it is not covered under the warranty.
Some advice: practice each of the stiches on light, medium & heavy-weight fabric. Note the settings used for each stitch/fabric combo. I put mine in the 3-ring binder I use for the print-out of the user manual. With each stich section, I used Avery dividers (clear), and taped the samples to the divider. That makes the sample easy to see.
I also included the parts list & schematic. There are a number of helpful pages for using special presser feet and I included instructions for them, with illustrations, at the back of the binder.

Loving my serger

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, High Quality, Many Thread Combinations & Self Adjusting

Cons: No Instruction On How To Use Feet

This did take a little time to figure out. I couldn't get it threaded on the far left. I decided to remove the top plate and it was easy peasy. I was also told to use high quality thread or it will keep breaking, I use Guitermann. Thread has never broke. I also tie the new spool thread to the previous used thread and I don't need to rethread it. My only complaint would be that there are no instructions on what menu is used with the six extra feet they give you. I want to apply elastic and pearls, but I feel clueless on how to do this.
