2nd Athena in 35 years!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

In 1976, I bought my first Athena 2000 Singer machine (with a matching cabinet). Loved the machine--had a stay-at-home business making wedding dresses and attendants clothing. Still using the machine when I purchased the new Athena 2009 in March 2011. While the new machine head is larger than the original model, I find that sewing with it is so much fun. I have just finished a clergy stole and it turned out beautifully. I have been 're-energized' about my sewing because it's so much fun now. I especially love the "self-threading" needle. I'd recommend this machine to anyone, beginner to advanced.

Great machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I am very impressed with this machine. The selection of stitches available allow the machine to work in part as a serger, so stretch fabrics are easy to work with. I was also impressed with the ease of use and the low learning curve in using it. Instructional dvds were very helpful - especially in using specialized feet for the machine.

Great value for this machine!

Product is amazing! I could not believe how many extra goodies I got with my purchase. Beautiful stitches and I don't even need to thread it!

Athena ; great machine

This is a fine sewing machine. The video instructions were an added bonus. I was impressed with the quality of stitching and extra attachments. I have only one wish about it. My previous machine had a switch that allowed one to stop with the needle "down", or not. I miss that.

Better than I expected

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, Lots Of Great Accessory Feet

10 out of 12 people found this helpful.

This sewing machine came with more "feet" than I expected. It sews smoothly and is very easy to operate. The only thing I notice is it does not go as fast as the more expensive machines. I took a short class to learn how to use all the machine's features and there were other more expensive machines of many brands in the class.. Yet, my machine did as well as any of them, except for speed. It is great for simple sewing of any kind.

Only one complaint

Cons: Can't Use My Cabinet

This is my 2nd Athena, I got my first one in 1977 and purchased cabinet model 365. My complaint is that the new Athena cannot be anchored to this lovely cabinet which is in excellent condition.

Self Threading

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I picked this machine because it's self threading. It also has 30 built in stitches, 1 step buttonholer, an extended table for larger projects, and drop and sew bobbin. It's a great machine.

I love this machine. I had a very old machine that was limping along and finally decided to treat myself to a new one. I love the extra stitches and ease of operation. Yes, after many years with the old machine, it took awhile to get used to the new one, but well worth it.

Disappointed

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Expensive

6 out of 9 people found this helpful.

Had this machine one week and I am disappointed. Thread bundled constantly. Had to have a service man out to fix it. He told me it needs to be oiled in the bobbin area every hour I am sewing. Totally ridiculous cos I sew quilts for hours on end. The needle threader works once in a while! My Brother machine is a far better quality.

P.O.S.

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated, Expensive

I am very dissaponted with this machine. From day 1, I have had problems with the bobbing thread bunching and looping up. Then after 2 years of VERY LIGHT use, I thought the foot pedal had given out. I took the machine to Joanne's to see how much it would cost to replace the pedal and was quoted $40 for the pedal, and $100 to fix the bobbin. Bear in mind that I paid $200 for the machine. I took the machine to a repair shope who actually took it apart and tested it, only to learn that the timing has been off (hence the looping bobbin), and the computer board within the machine is overheating and causing the machine to automatically shut off, or not start at all. The repair cost would be to ship the machine back to Singer, and have the $90 computer board replaced, not including labor. I'm going to sell this POS for parts and buy a used machine without a derned computer!

Athena 2009

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I purchased this machine as a back-up when my other machine is being serviced or busy on another product, but I find this so easy to use that I am using it more. I really like it the only feature that it doesn't have is the alphabet and automatic presserfoot.

No more Magnifier needed!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I bought this machine for its automatic needle threader. With my old machine, I needed my glasses, strong lighting and a good magnifier to try to calmly thread needle. I also had to be in a good mood! Now it's such a PLEASURE to sew!

So far so good

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features

Got a couple of these for ladies in Honduras, along with Inspiration. Language barriers a little bit of a problem, but owner's guides in Spanish was one major reason for buying these, and the Inspiration. They are a good fit for the ladies who are learning quickly. When it comes time to move up the heavy-duty ladder, Singer will probably be first choice.

I am new to sewing and had been using a brother machine. (very basic) I saw this machine on HSN and loved the features plus all the extras which came with the machine. I am confident this is a great investment, knowing that this machine will provide me with years of sewing and the ability to learn without having to turn right around and buy something with more features since this machine will always "know more than me"

A SAD AND BAD PURCHASE

Overall Rating:

Pros: None

Cons: Poor Quality, Expensive

3 out of 4 people found this helpful.

This machine gave me problems from the first time I tried to use it. The thread kept bunching and eventually the bobbin tray went out of sync after 1/2 hour of sewing. I had the machine repaired after one use, and the second time I used it, it failed again. Same problem, faulty bobbin mechanism that goes out of sync causing the thread to loop and bunch. I have been sewing all my young adult and adult life. This is not the first machine I have used. I know how to read instructions, thread, adjust, and even trouble shoot machines. This product was made cheaply, and the bobbin tray and mechanism is bad. Don't waste money repairing it!!! This is a poorly manufactured lemon. I miss the old Singer, heavy duty, made in the USA machines.

Dissappointed, constant headache

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Expensive

2 out of 5 people found this helpful.

I ordered the Athena 2009 online, and have had problems with the bobbin thread looping and bunching constantly since day 1. This is regardless of thread, fabric weight, or needle size, and varoud trouble-shooting attempts. After only two years of very light use, the foot pedal died. Keep looking for a more reliable machine, in my opinion, or maybe I just ended up with the lemon.

Nice Machine!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: A Bit Slow, Harder To Adjust Tension And Stitch Width/length Than It Should Be

I am a self taught crafter, designer, and sewer. I found the Singer Athena to be fairly easy to operate right out of the box. I could thread it, load the bobbin, and generally operate it with little help from the manual. Loved that! However, I had trouble getting the tension right (even after pouring over the manual). And this being my first electronic machine, I had trouble getting used to the split second delay of the stop and start of the foot pedal (I was later told by a quiting friend that it actually assists in keeping track of stitches for quilters. I have yet to figure that out, but I will keep an open mind). So, that was a bit annoying. I also didn't like that it was more difficult to 'set' the width and length of stitches with this set up than with the Kenmore or the Brother that I already had. I also did NOT like that it is SLOWER than my other machines! Other than that, I loved the huge work table and the easy drop in bobbin, as well as the easy thread needle option. That feater is awesome! All the extra stitches that it offers were not as easy to use, given that I could not even get a simple zig-zag to work properly. I guess it will take some practice to get the tension and the stitch selection feature to work hand in hand to get the look the way I want.

Bobbin issues

Overall Rating:

My machine sewed great then all of a sudden it made a loud noise and now the thread won't catch the needle and I have not been able to sew with it and it is only 4 months old. No idea what happened to it. Singer customer service is hard to get ahold of too.
