Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features

I bought this last year in May and didn't start taking it out of the box until this spring for I also have a Brother, Janome Emerald Husqvarna and Brother Lock. Since I got laid off I started sewing more to make extra money, I was a bit disappointed that it didn't sound right in the beginning and the thread get crumpled a lot at the bottom, so I just set it aside and use what I have due to downtime using. Dont' get me wrong, I love singer my Dad was a professional tailor back in the days and used only Singer, and I learned sewing when I was a kid from a vintage all metal none electric singer sewing machine. Maybe I just got a little lemon, but haven't given up on singer even if my Brother machine & serger never failed me.

The first year I had my sewing machine, which I had not sewed on it a few projects, 2 pillows made. The the whole bobbin casing pops out. Had fixed. Then brought home and started sewing on it again and the bobbin case pops out and all of my stitches are messed up this time. Now I am debating on where to take it to have them fix it. The place I took it before couldn't fix it. I also found a singer electronic sewing machine an older one and the bobbin case had a problem like my new sewing machine. One time singer use to be a good sewing machine, now I have many doubts about their sewing machines. I gave over $800.00 for that sewing machine thinking it was a better one. In my opinion its not and I am disappointed in the singer company.

Disappointment

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Service Program And Help Center

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

The cost of basic service is high. The nearest service center it an hour away. I could go on and on about the disappointment, but I'm just disgusted. The machine was a Christmas gift and now its junk. I should be able to repair minor tension problems, but even in 2014 the directions offer little or no help and there are no videos on you tube or this website for troubleshoot these problems.

It was a very reasonable price. Super easy to use. I love that it has serveral stretch stitches and button hole styles. I like making things for the house and clothes for the kids. This machine makes it easy and decorative. I'm having fun trying out all the stitches.

I absolutely had no sewing experience. I read the manual and viewed the video and pretty soon I was sewing. It pretty much paid for itself with all the alteration I have done in a few months I have been using it.

Happy Sewer

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Good User Manual

Cons: Needs Better And Much More Extensive Singer 8870 Curvy Video Training For Registered Owners

2 out of 2 people found this helpful.

I am of the old school sewing machines, where all would easily sew through denim. I had purchased a nice Brother machine from Costco only to have to return it because the machine simply was not durable or reliable regarding its stitching. I have had my new Singer 8870 Curvy for several months and I have used it for stretch to denim fabrics. It is a really nice sewing machine. It has some very nice features that beginner sewers should like such as button touch stitch width and length which indicates optimum settings but still allows the sewer to modify within “allowable parameters.” This is important because a lot of folks are scared of breaking their sewing machine so they won’t even try some of the very fun and useful stitches this machine offers. Be assured that someone who teaches sewing took the time to make using this machine easy and enjoyable for the novice and the advanced sewer alike… so kudos to Singer Engineers for that. The button and button hole features are easy for this machine but I think Singer should have put in the manual a web link to specific training for this and other machine stitches. This is not a machine that I would sew through the 8-layer denim pant crotch with yet, but I might try one day once I have had more time with it. The book that comes with the machine is the sewers most important tool. The referencing to stitch use and needling is nice. I would have liked to see (and maybe this exists somewhere on the Singer site) a video course on this, 8870 Curvy, sewing machine that teaches users, step-by-step classes for every stitch using at least three different fabrics for results. I have not been successful with fancy/specialty embroidery threads. I really want to be. I would love a Singer created video course in this area for the 8770 Curvy as this is a feature Singer says this machine is good at and I’m sure it is, I have not had that experience - and I am very aware that thread and needle and bobbin need to be properly coordinated for this to be managed. Please Singer, if you are reading this make more detailed training videos for this machine and you will sell a lot more of them. One of the things I had read about this machine from other users was that the automatic needle threader did not work well. I had no problem with this feature. Users might want to remember to hand wind the needle to its highest resting point as well as remembering that Singer does say to use Singer needles (Singer needles and bobbins are sold everywhere and are not costly). I hope this post is helpful to those considering this machine. I really did a lot of searching for the right machine to spend my money on. It is much more than a basic sewer but extremely easy to understand and use. After using my 8770 Curvy for several months I feel able to say that this machine deliver’s a durable quality product. My only concern with this machine is when using fancy thread I have had bad results, but that could be because I need knowledge that I can’t find to help me with this at this time. You should be very pleased with your 8870 Curvy ownership experience.

MY MACHINE WORKED FINE UNTIL I WAS SEWING SOME VELCRO AND IT STOPPED WORKING AND WON'T SEW AT ALL NOW. I CALLED JOANNE FABRICS AND THEY SAID IT WAS OVER 3 MONTHS OLD SO THEY WON'T REPLACE IT AND IT WILL HAVE TO BE REPAIRED. I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT.

What a great sewing machine, I thought I didn't really need a new one......but. It's so much easier to use than my last one.Love being able to put a button in and it makes the right size button hole.So many stitches to choose from and easy to do.Like the fact that it's a little bigger machine, infact there's not a thing I don't like about it!

I have been using my machine for 1 year now and am very happy with it. I have been sewing for about 50 some years starting with a Singer treadle machine that is still in the family. I did have an issue with the timing needing to be reset by the local factory authorized repair shop but since it was only 11 months since purchase, everything was covered by Singer. I use it mostly for quilting which has become my latest addiction. I enjoy the various presser feet but wondered why the 1/4 inch foot was not included. I had to purchase it separately from your website. But now my seams for quilting are 1/4" perfect. Thank you Singer for always creating a great product.

I am still quite new to sewing, but this machine is really user friendly! It sews easily, it is easy to learn how to use, and once you are ready to advance your sewing...it is ready to advance with you! I absolutely love it! It is worth the spend! If you want to save a little money, wait for it to go on sale at Joann's...up to $200 OFF!!

Frustrated with singer sewing machines.

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Expensive

I just bought this machine in November, 2012, 3 months ago, and it is already acting up!
It seems to be jammed and does not want to turn .
I had exchanged it and paid a large difference because the previous machine I had, that was maybe, 5 or 6 years old, was
having to be repaired every few months. So the store owner where I had bought it recommendedi this one.
I would need to bring this one in to be looked at and repaired or get my money back.I am so fed up dealing with this women where I bought it and I would like to have a sewing machine I can depend on and not have to be bringing it in to be repaired, at a place where the repair man only comes in every 2 weeks.
I will have to be without the machine for 2 to 3 weeks if I have to back to that place, because I don't live very close to the store
and the women/owner is very frustrating to deal with!
Do you have a place that gives better service and is more dependable to recommend, that I could go to, to see about this machine? PLEASE?

Have used a singer since I learned to sew (started on a treadle). My last machine lasted 25 years. So of course I went and got me another Singer. This machine is great, smooth running, easy to use. I have not had any problems. I would say if you wanted a good all around machine this is it.

I LOVE this machine! Great stitches for utilitarian and decorative. Tension is perfect and I have quilted 4 layers and turned around and finished an organdy top without a problem. I keep manual handy as I am still learning the machine's ends and outs.Love that I can put "pedal to the metal" and run long seams with ease. This is my 'go to' machine. (I own other Singers)and use them for different types of work. So very happy I purchased this machine.

My experience with the 8770 Curvy

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality, Service Center

From the first time I used the machine I had problems with the bobbin case. First I thought maybe my bobbin wasn't prepared properly but that wasn't it. I used the machine for a month and it kept getting worse. After spending close to a hour on hold for customer service, I was told that I would have to bring it to a Singer repair center. The closest on was 65 miles away. The milage wasn't a big deal, but the construction on the way made my one way trip two and a half hours. Upon arriving at AllBrands in Baton Rouge, LA, I was told that Singer just doesn't make a good product anymore and the best thing for me to do was to return the machine to JoAnn's (where it was purchased) and go to AllBrands in Lafayette and purchase a Brother sewing machine, as they are the better machine. I was in shock. I like my machine but it was obvious that if I demanded that it be fixed I would be returning for it to be fixed again. I haven't returned the machine. I am going to try and use a repair service that isn't a Singer authorized repair service and hope for the best. I had to borrow a friends machine to complete the project that I had to have finished. Other than the bobbin case jumping out of position I love my 8770 Curvy, just hope I can get it repaired and able to use it.

Worst $400 I've ever spent

Pros: Bobbin Winds Easy

Cons: Poor Quality

I have had nothing but problems with this machine since it came out of the box. unfortunitly, my mother was ill and I was unable to open it until after the return period for HSN or I would have send it back. I've gone over the manuel from top to bottom and cannot get the machine to work right and am and experienced sewer. I took it into a local repair guy and she shook his head and just said that singer isnt what it used to be...we're not buying the machines our moms bought 50 years ago. I feel like I bought a $400 paperweight especially since I've found it impossible to get ahold of singers customer service.

Great Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Presser Foot Lifter Location

14 out of 16 people found this helpful.

I was nervous when I purchased this machine, if I was going to be able figure out how to operate it or not? The instruction manual is easy to read and follow. The short DVD helps with Getting Started. It threads easily, and the Automatic Needle Threader really works!! It is sewing denium, light weight and stretchy fabric beutifully without having to make any adjustments! Only one problem I'm having is getting use to the Presser Foot Lifter location: I'm use to it being in the back of the machine/needle, this one is to the right of the needle. Aside from the Presser Foot Lifter location, I am very pleased with this machine performance and ease of use.

I have never used a sewing machine before purchasing this one. On a whim, I decided that I was going to buy a sewing machine. I never thought I would be able to figure it out without a class, but to my surprise, I read the manual and have been sewing all evening. This machine makes sewing so easy and fun. I just started sewing today but I feel like a pro! Highly Recommended!!!

Prior to taking a quilting class, I never used a sewing machine and I only knew how to sew missing buttons on shirts. After taking this class with this machine, I am hooked!!! If you're a beginnier like me, this is a great machine at a great price with all the bells and whistles. I can't wait to get started on my next project!!

I am an accomplished sewer, and I have owned a variety of sewing machines. The reason I bought this machine is to "have it all", for sewing projects just shy of the embroidery level. I do some projects for friends, such as drapes, valences, and repairs, they give me gift cards for our local chain. I saved up a few of them and bought the curvey. I keep my book next to me and I feel it is very easy to manage. I bought a singer for the product reliablilty, and I saw a few demos on HSN for inspiration. But mostly I knew that I could easily figure it all out and take it to my own next level.

I love this sewing machine. I had all but given up on sewing until I purchased the Curvy. I can do everything I wanted to do and then some. I am starting to take up some new hobbies now that I have a machine I don't have to fight with. I would highly recommend this to anyone that needs to do more than just basic sewing.

Curvy 8770

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use, High Quality, Tough

Cons: Small Lettering

28 out of 30 people found this helpful.

I was nervous about such an investment, but I'm all better now. This machine works wonderfully, and I really push it to the limit. I have sewn through layers of denim and bulky fabrics and aside from when I pushed the fabric (user error) the machine has handled it all nicely.
My only complaint is the size of the lettering available. It was one reason I bought the 8770 and unfortunately it will not serve me in that capacity.
I am relatively new at sewing and the 8770 is very easy to learn.

8770-A very good Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

I have been sewing for three years now and I started my first stitch out on this machine. It is very novice friendly. It looks and feels pricey. Since then I have sewed and repaired dozens of pajamas, dresses, bedspreads, jeans, crafts and blankets. I have only had two minor problems with the machine, both of which were self adjustable and easy to complete. There are great decorative features, some of which I have yet to try. I can personalize kid's items with names or numbers. The machine is not complicated but it gets the job done.
I can honestly say I love this machine. It looks great and works hard with low noise(my husband can sleep through my sewing sessions in our room). My husband purchased this machine as a gift for me. Initially I agonized over the price he spent on the machine and warrenty but after these three years I believe it was worth it.

I purchased the Curvy about 2 months ago. I love the machine! I have just completed a quilt and can honestly say I had no problems at all with this machine. I previously had a Singer Quantum that I loved but sadly it died after about 12 years of loyal service. I can say that this machine lives up to the more expensive Quantum and I am very pleased with my purchase. I would highly recommend the Curvy to anyone interested in a very reliable sewing machine.
