Perfect for Beginners

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

I received this machine as a gift two years ago and love it. I have used it to make numerous items including curtains, little girl dresses, toddler clothes, women's tops and at least a dozen pair of pajama pants and sleep shorts.
I have read all the previous reviews and am wondering if they were for the same model as I have had no such problems with my model 3116. The manual is very clear and easy to understand how to operate and care for my machine.
My favorite feature is the needle threader and the button hole foot. Who knew making button holes was so EASY?!
The only problem I have encountered is the thread will bunch up on the bottom of my work at times and I have noticed this usually happens after I have changed my thread (not every time, but every once in a while). Simple solution is to re-thread :).
All in all, I am very happy with this machine and would recommend it to any beginner to start out with.

Little machine that could

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use

Cons: Few Features, Not Quiet

We were on a budget and bought this machine about three years ago. It immediately developed a squeak which no amount of oil has managed to quell but that just adds to it's charm ;)
I can honestly say I've gotten my money's worth - I'm a machine quilter and between my quilts and other side projects, that little sewing machine has been through far more than it was ever meant to. I actually came online to look into replacing the belts, which are pretty tired and got sidetracked here.
I have long since outgrown this machine and am saving up for something much bigger, faster and stronger. In the meantime it just chugs along.
I doubt that it will last 50+ years like the old Singers do but few thing will these days.
It's a great little machine for a beginner or occassional sewer.

Cons: Poor Quality

I purchased my Simple 3116 in August. Even with normal sewing and routine care, by December the reverse lever had stripped out and fallen off the machine. By March the machine was out of time and will cost me more to fix than I paid for the machine. I am deeply disapointed in the quality and Singers companys response about the warrenty. They will not be keeping me as a customer and I will not be recomending their products.

Piece o' Junk

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated

7 out of 8 people found this helpful.

This machine was worthless straight out of the box, loud and clunky and I couldn't even get a straight line of stitches sewn without jams and the thread breaking. I even had someone who has 30 years of sewing and machine experience take a look at it and even they couldn't get it to work. A friend of mine also had this machine and had the exact same problems with it. I'm pretty confused about the poor quality because Singer is so well known for making great machines... hopefully I can get a manufacturers refund and find a machine I can actually sew to pieces of fabric together with.

My husband bought this machine as my mother's day gift (yes its what I asked for) and I absolutely love it! I am just a beginner at sewing and I have sat up and used this machine to sew something every night since I got it. It is well made and easy to use! I love the self threader.

What a surprise to me when I started to sew with my new machine.:{ I want to have my old one back. I wasn't using it at the time so I gave it to a little old lady. So she could make things to sell. I since, have not been able to find her to get my favorite sewing machine in a cabinet. :( I too have quite a few complaints about this machine. The reverse knob is off, it feels like it is stripped. This was very cheaply made product. I was going to order a replacement part, but it sounds like more people have the same problem and it goes on back order. It wasn't very easy to get the thread tension set for any of the decorative functions. I am still trying to get use to the reverse knob way up front. Also the pressure foot release seems to get caught, then the foot is off. Never figured out the needle threader, but it would be helpful since our eyes have a hard time threading it now that I'm older than when I first started sewing. I do like the ease of threading the machine. It is also light weight thats a good thing. I will be looking for a different machine or go back to an older model.

Great Machine for a beginner!

I bought my machine 1 1/2 years ago and have had no problems with it. It even got dropped once!!
This is an excellent machine for someone who is just beginning to sew or wants just the very basics. It has very simple and easy to use stitch selector, length adjuster and tension adjuster. The instruction manual was very clear and easy to understand. It also doubled as a refresher course for me since I haven't sewn since Home Ec in Jr High School (almost 20 years). I will buy another Singer machine when I am ready to upgrade.

Simple Machine Indeed

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: The Reverse Lever Is Of Poor Quality!

5 out of 5 people found this helpful.

I recently received this as a Christmas Present. I was so excited to start some projects! I have found it difficult to find sheets for toddler beds, so I decided that would be my first project. When I sat down to start, I couldn't get the sewing machine to work correctly. I had to sewing experts take a look at the machine and they still couldn't figure it out. No matter how you adjusted the tensioning the thread would create a horrible "birds nest" on the bottom side of the fabric. I took it back to the store that it was purchased at and had one of the associates check it out. She re-threaded the machine and made sure the bobbin was threaded correctly. Of course, when she tried it, it worked PERFECTLY. I'm guessing we were just missing something. Since, I brought it home it has worked perfectly. I have not had to re-thread the machine yet, so we shall see how I do when it is time.

I did however break the reverse handle right away. I pulled on it a little too hard and stripped the inside. Luckily my hubby was able to fix it and it works fine now.

For the price of the machine, I do believe it was a good buy. I don't claim to be an expert at all with sewing, so this machine is simple and perfect for me. I'm excited to start some new projects in the future!!

basic, intro machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Down-to-earth Features

Cons: Noisy, Weak Feed, Bulky Obtrusive Head, Slow

5 out of 5 people found this helpful.

Not a bad machine, but it has some very annoying design characteristics. The head at the end of the arm projects out a long way, and gets in the way of hands and work. The lever for raising the foot is small and inconveniently located. The reversing lever is right in front, so your hand gets in your way when you're reversing. In short, the ergonomics is very poor.

The machine comes with a button-stitching foot that I don't need -- it's just as easy to do them by hand. A blind hemming foot would have been a much more useful standard inclusion.

The feed mechanism is so weak that work just gets stuck at the edge of the foot, and the needle thread gets sucked back very easily because it isn't held firmly against the fabric. You need to hold it by hand much more than I think should be necessary.

There is no access to change the light bulb without removing a screw. There seems to be no intention that users could access the camshaft and motor for maintenance.

One other surprise is that the longest possible stitch length is very, very short. I wouldn't use it for basting because it's too short for quick unpicking.

The machine slows incredibly slowly, and noisily.

On the positive, the machine feels robust, apart from the rubber feet that simply fall out of the base.

Why did I pick this machine? Because it was the only one in my local store that had sewing-oriented features. The others were all high-priced embroidery machines for people who want to decorate. In hindsight I should have picked something a bit higher up, but you never really know what you've got until you've got it, and the only demonstrations you can get at my local store are all about the embroidery features, which isn't what I want a sewing machine for.

For a beginner who doesn't expect much skills development, or who just wants to mess around, this could be a good choice. If you're the kind of person who wants to get things done without the machine holding you up, I recommend looking higher up the range.

I regret to say that this machine seems to be a piece of junk. The reverse has broken and is stuck there. The stitch cannot be adjusted no matter what I set it on, stays on very small. I am not satisfied with how this has progressed. This is the first time I used it. Thank you.

I bought this machine 6 months ago after having learned to sew on a store brand hand me down that was older than I am. About 2 months after I bought it, the reverse lever stripped out. Six weeks later, the replacement part was still backordered, and my husband ended up epoxying the broken piece back on. Now, 5 kids' dresses, one adult shirt, one crib bedding set, and half a newborn dress later, it is shot and the repairs will cost as much as a new machine. It was properly and vigorously maintained according to the manual. Maybe mine's a lemon, but either way, I'd say spend your money elsewhere. Singer is clearly not what it used to be.

I expected a quilting arm but it doesn't have one, and I can't find one. I'm making do without. I have two homes and use more versatile machines in the other. I use this machine for very basic duties. It's a good basic machine.

Good basic machine for the price.

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use

My old (non-Singer) machine broke and it was far too expensive to repair. My sewing needs are simple: forward/backward/over-cast/button-holes. My husband purchased this machine as a gift. It has performed wonderfully for the most part. I have had to use the screwdriver tool to tighten the bobbin casing a few times. However, it is meeting all my current needs. For a basic machine, it works well and is well-priced. Not sure if it will last as long as my other machine, however.

Over all good for the money

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use

Cons: Reverse Lever Weak

4 out of 4 people found this helpful.

I have owned 3 Singer machines in the 40 years I have been sewing. My first one was a black heavy metal Singer that was given to me when I was about 12 yrs old. I still have it and it works great but only has forward and reverse. The next Singer I won in the "Fastest Needle in the West" sewing contest at the Oklahoma State Fair in 1981. It was a Model 2010. I used it until Oct 2008 when a gear broke inside. I took it for repair and since it was quite well used and loved, the repairman changed out the gear but it never seemed correct again. Since at this time I was now unemployed and needing a new machine but could not afford an expensive one, my choice was the Model 3116. I bought it January 2009 and it worked quite well until the reverse lever cracked and fell out after about 8 months of use. Overall though the machine has been a good value for the money. There are 2 other people in my immediate family that also purchased this model and they have had no problems with their machines.

Cons: Poor Quality

I am not satisfied with this machine. I bought it Dec 2011. At first it was fine, but now I notice different sounds that wasn't there before and the thread tends to bunch up in the bobbin at times. The tension keeps changes. I would not recommend this machine.

Singer Simple Great for Novices

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Complicated, Threading And Tension

3 out of 5 people found this helpful.

I bought this machine last christmas to start sewing but had many difficulties, so I would not reccomend this for a beginnger, but I must say after taking a sewing class this summer this machine has been so much better and easier to use. I learned how to correctly insert bobbins and needles and everything else that I had problems with before. So I'd advice to go to a sewing class and learn how to handle sewing machines before using this singer.
I gave the features a 3 star because all you need for a beginning sewing machine is front and back stitch, the other things this machine has to offer should just be there and aren't really features.
I gave a 4 star for value because I should sell this for half of what I got this, its value isn't one that last long. It serves its purpose for being a great beginners sewing machine but it can't lead you to being a advance sewing, you'd need to upgrade. But I know I'll keep the machine for future uses with friends and it's pretty high quality for a beginner machine, so for that a 4 star.

I'm giving performance a 4, since I do realize its a beginner machine its great for that purpose but using it sometimes proves difficult, especially for people who are just starting.

Over all rating is 4 and I think I don't need to explain that. :)

Pros: Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Weak Reverse Lever, Feed Dogs Don't Work Right

2 out of 2 people found this helpful.

I am new to sewing so decided to start out with a simple sewing machine that I could practice on and I had decided on this singer simple. My reverse lever doesn't work right and when I decided to put my feed dogs down to try some free motion quilting I had a heck of a time getting them back up. It was like they were stuck in the down position

Good start, poor finish

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

The machine worked great the first few times I used it. It is lightweight and easy to pull out and put away, not like the old ones! I had mine about a year or a little more and the reverse nob stripped. It is only made of plastic and not reinforced. At the same time the reverse stuck.I was thinking of getting it fixed, but may cost almost as much as a new one!

Cons: Loud

I've owned this machine going on five years now and it still works great! Perhaps mine was made a little stronger b/c I have one of the first ones made before they began to make them cheaply. Yes it can be loud but a little oil goes a long way. I have learned to check out the tension when the thread starts to roll up on the bobbin side. I was a great machine for me to start on & I am still sewing.

Great little workhouse machine for the price

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value

Cons: Few Features, Too Many Extra Steps And Tools Needed To Clean And Use This Machine

This little machine works great, but has some drawbacks. You can't get to the light bulb without having to use screwdriver to unscrew the face plate (previous Singer machine had face plate on a hinge, so it was very easy to change the light bulb). This also makes it time consuming to thread the needle and to clean the machine in this area. The bobbins are plastic, but I have substituted the plastic bobbins with metal bobbins and the machine works fine. The location to hold a spool of thread is cumbersome, and if you leave the spool of thread in place when you are ready to put away the machine, this location interferes with the carrying handle. Lastly, there is no where to place a seam/edge guide on the needle plate, unless you use a heavy duty magnet. Previous Singer machines had a small screwhole on the needle plate where you could screw on an adjustable seam/edge guide.
