Since 1851, the name Singer has been synonymous with sewing. The spirit of practical design and creative innovation that characterized the company at its beginning continues today as we develop products for every level of sewing. We have celebrated many firsts, including the world's first zig-zag machine, the first electronic machines and we now proudly produce the world's most advanced home sewing and embroidery machine. From home décor and clothing construction to embroidery and quilting, SINGER® is dedicated to help people express themselves through sewing.
I purchased this machine and it constantly jams and snarls the thread. I am constantly resewing the one inch of fabric because i have to cut the thread and pull it out of the work. I have ruined too many pieces of fabric and spent well over 6 hours just trying to sew a straight line of fabric about a yard long. I have looked all over the internet and apparently this is an issue with this model and there is no fix. I have had it serviced and even he was unable to sew with it. My friend who bought one with me also has the same issue. Unless a new sewing machine magically shows up at my door step I will NEVER buy a Singer again!
I am a beginner and have this machine, but mine is called the Prelude 8280 (it's only 4 years old, so I guess they changed the name...it looks the same). Anyway, I also had an issue with the thread snarling, so I put in a bright thread for the needle thread and a completely different bright thread for the bobbin thread to figure out the issue. The problem was that I needed to make sure the needle thread was pulled out behind the machine, under the presser foot. I had the thread over the presser foot and it was catching. Once I resolved that issue, the machine works beautifully.
The previous reviewer is dead on. Do not purchase this machine. I am taking sewing lessons and my instructor is frustrated at my machine as well and amazed at how non-functional it is since it is brand-new! This machine has wasted my precious time, materials, and itself was a waste of money. This is my first purchase of a Singer product and agree that it will also be my last.
I really do not understand the negative reviews. This is my first sewing machine and I used the DVD to understand what to do. At first the thread kept breaking until I switched to another type. I had very cheap thread that I used for hand sewing that was like 3 bucks for 10. I used a different thread and now it works perfect and I have used it a ton since I got it at Christmas. I honestly think the bad reviews are either from people who don't know how to use the machine or people who are using a cheap thread like I was in the beginning.
Also, I don't know how to explain this well but when threading the machine I do no pull the string tightly under the first part (the part that says 1 on it). When I put it under it tightly all the way I tend to have a more difficult time.
Pros:Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality
Cons:My Old Bobbins Don't Fit, Slip Cover Is Hopeless

I'm a complete beginner I just remember the basics from school I earn now from watching YouTube ! I just wanted I straight forward basic machine, it's quieter lighter than my old singer it was about 30 years old and went to a good home on free cycle . I have lots to learn and I think this is ideal for my needs.
I am a beginner and only use it occasionally. I received as a gift but i really have no complaints so far. I use it for basic hems , mending, small crafts etc...so far its doing the job . If simple sewing is what your looking for then this is perfect.
I bought this for a go-between. My full size machine needed $75 worth of repair--it was about 45 years old--so I traded it in on a used one which I am very disappointed with. Later I saw this little one to use as a go between. I do not expect a lot out of it but it was hard to learn but is easier to use now BUT I do not know where to buy bobbins for it. My supply of about 50 bobbins do not fit it. Otherwise it does the job, but is awfully noisy. I KNOW---it is for a child but have limited income and cannot afford one that I am used to. The bobbins are my most concern.
Cons:The Wheel Gets Loose Every Time I Used It And When I Took It To The Dealer For Repair He Became So Upset About It That The 3rd Time That I Took The Machine I Asked Him To Replaced It But Instead He Kept It For 3 Weeks And, I Decided To Keep It And Buy Ano

I am not an expert on the field, I only used my machine for basic things. Very dissapointed with this one.
I LOVE this sewing machine! I've already made/repaired a pair of arm warmers with it (I was hand sewing before I got it). The instructional DVD was very helpful in getting me started. Thank you so much!

My old singer had tension problems so I decided to buy a new one when the ad appeared in our paper.
I only need the basic functions at this stage in my life but I needed a machine that would stich over heavy denim seams. The salesman assured me it would glide right over them. When I got home and tried it I found it did not "glide" right over them, but with much effort I finally got the hem in my husbands pants sewed satisfactorily.
The machine is easy to thread and winds the bobbins great. I'm looking forward to using it for the little sewing I now do, i.e. mending, sewing ripped seams etc. And the price was very attractive. I'm now 85 and I got my first Singer when I was 15 (a treadle model) so I'm a life long Singer advocate. Barbara Googe

Has all the features with free hand embroidery, though with limitations which makes it a good beginners machine. All required optional accessories and parts were easily got immediately. Speed control is excellent. Hope to graduate to computerized machine soon. The manual coming with the machine was guide enough to start with no earlier demo.
The thread from the bobbin gets horribly snarled up. When I try to use the button foot, it snarls up even more and breaks the needle. My extremely experienced mother inlaw even tried to get it to work with no luck.
Sooo DISAPPOINTED!!! Made an apron at 12 on my Grandmother's 1950's Singer. Something wrong with the bobbin. Saw other model review but same complaint about bobbin. Have to go buy another machine. Have sewing business. NO TIME to send away to factory. I'm so SAD!!!
