Piece of Junk

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality

I purchased this machine and it constantly jams and snarls the thread. I am constantly resewing the one inch of fabric because i have to cut the thread and pull it out of the work. I have ruined too many pieces of fabric and spent well over 6 hours just trying to sew a straight line of fabric about a yard long. I have looked all over the internet and apparently this is an issue with this model and there is no fix. I have had it serviced and even he was unable to sew with it. My friend who bought one with me also has the same issue. Unless a new sewing machine magically shows up at my door step I will NEVER buy a Singer again!

Works for me

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use

I am a beginner and have this machine, but mine is called the Prelude 8280 (it's only 4 years old, so I guess they changed the name...it looks the same). Anyway, I also had an issue with the thread snarling, so I put in a bright thread for the needle thread and a completely different bright thread for the bobbin thread to figure out the issue. The problem was that I needed to make sure the needle thread was pulled out behind the machine, under the presser foot. I had the thread over the presser foot and it was catching. Once I resolved that issue, the machine works beautifully.

Singer Prelude - Awful Machine!

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality

The previous reviewer is dead on. Do not purchase this machine. I am taking sewing lessons and my instructor is frustrated at my machine as well and amazed at how non-functional it is since it is brand-new! This machine has wasted my precious time, materials, and itself was a waste of money. This is my first purchase of a Singer product and agree that it will also be my last.

Singer Prelude

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

This machine would be perfect for my basic sewing needs if it wasn't for one very annoying problem; the thread gets snarled in the machine regularly.

It's very frustrating to keep having to stop sewing, de-snarl the thread from the machine, unpick the last inch of sewing and then start again.

good buy

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: The Foot Pad Is Not Sticky When Put On The Floor

my daughter aged 9.5 and she knows how to use this machine. It is easy to use.... however, it needs patience to read the manual first before your foot stepped on the machines.

People get annoyed as they have to pair the cloth's quality with the size of needle used.

It is happy to have my daughter starting sewing.

I really do not understand the negative reviews. This is my first sewing machine and I used the DVD to understand what to do. At first the thread kept breaking until I switched to another type. I had very cheap thread that I used for hand sewing that was like 3 bucks for 10. I used a different thread and now it works perfect and I have used it a ton since I got it at Christmas. I honestly think the bad reviews are either from people who don't know how to use the machine or people who are using a cheap thread like I was in the beginning.

Also, I don't know how to explain this well but when threading the machine I do no pull the string tightly under the first part (the part that says 1 on it). When I put it under it tightly all the way I tend to have a more difficult time.

this will teach me to buy from "one day only sales" I am a novice but I could even tell this not right. I could not ever get the thing to sew, just bunched up every time..

I'm a complete beginner I just remember the basics from school I earn now from watching YouTube ! I just wanted I straight forward basic machine, it's quieter lighter than my old singer it was about 30 years old and went to a good home on free cycle .
I have lots to learn and I think this is ideal for my needs.

Not Worth It

I took it out of the box, and it won't work. Never got to use it. Singer won't do anything to try to fix it or replace it, so I will never buy a Singer again.

Review of #8280

Overall Rating:

Cons: Complicated, Odd Sized Bobbins

5 out of 11 people found this helpful.

I bought this for a go-between. My full size machine needed $75 worth of repair--it was about 45 years old--so I traded it in on a used one which I am very disappointed with. Later I saw this little one to use as a go between. I do not expect a lot out of it but it was hard to learn but is easier to use now BUT I do not know where to buy bobbins for it. My supply of about 50 bobbins do not fit it. Otherwise it does the job, but is awfully noisy. I KNOW---it is for a child but have limited income and cannot afford one that I am used to. The bobbins are my most concern.

I LOVE this sewing machine! I've already made/repaired a pair of arm warmers with it (I was hand sewing before I got it). The instructional DVD was very helpful in getting me started. Thank you so much!

Best Starting Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality, Good Service Offered.

Cons: Wish Mention Of Greasing Was There In The Manual.

3 out of 4 people found this helpful.

Has all the features with free hand embroidery, though with limitations which makes it a good beginners machine. All required optional accessories and parts were easily got immediately. Speed control is excellent. Hope to graduate to computerized machine soon. The manual coming with the machine was guide enough to start with no earlier demo.

I've been using the SINGER product ever since I was 13 years old (my very first machine). My last machine i dropped it and it broke. My daughter gave me the 8280 PRELUDE and I love it. I am so excited with my new machine. I just got it 2 days ago for christmas, and I've already started and completed a few projects. Love it, love it and love it... Thank you SINGER and thank you to me wonderful daughter, for the wonderful gift.

Easy Stitcher

My old singer had tension problems so I decided to buy a new one when the ad appeared in our paper.
I only need the basic functions at this stage in my life but I needed a machine that would stich over heavy denim seams. The salesman assured me it would glide right over them. When I got home and tried it I found it did not "glide" right over them, but with much effort I finally got the hem in my husbands pants sewed satisfactorily.
The machine is easy to thread and winds the bobbins great. I'm looking forward to using it for the little sewing I now do, i.e. mending, sewing ripped seams etc. And the price was very attractive. I'm now 85 and I got my first Singer when I was 15 (a treadle model) so I'm a life long Singer advocate. Barbara Googe

Sooo DISAPPOINTED!!! Made an apron at 12 on my Grandmother's 1950's Singer. Something wrong with the bobbin. Saw other model review but same complaint about bobbin. Have to go buy another machine. Have sewing business. NO TIME to send away to factory. I'm so SAD!!!

horrible

Cons: Poor Quality

The thread from the bobbin gets horribly snarled up. When I try to use the button foot, it snarls up even more and breaks the needle. My extremely experienced mother inlaw even tried to get it to work with no luck.

Great for Beginners

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Easy To Use, Good For Basic Sewing

Cons: Thread Bunches Up With No Solution On How To Fix

1 out of 1 people found this helpful.

I bought this machine years ago. I needed a new machine and my budget was limited. I have more than made my money back on this little gem. The reasons I didn't give it 5 Stars is the difficulty of finding the correct Size 15 bobbins (where to buy them?), the button hole attachment doesn't work right (I finally gave up and luckily don't make too many items that require button holes!). Now that my machine has so many miles on it, the thread bunches after sewing 1/2 inch. I have regularly cleaned and properly oiled my machine, threaded and set tension properly as well. I can't figure out what the problem is. I bought my machine in 2003, so I can say I more than got my money's worth. I also splurged and bought the Singer 2010, which I LOVE.
