Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality, Tension Adjustments Are Useless, Not A Good Value If It's Not Working, Can't Handle Every Fabric I Need To Work With

The machine lasted 18 months and then suddenly quit. Tension is never right, can't adjust it. Works on heavy fabric FORGET light fabrics it cannot handle them eats them up.

Disappointing. Have had to replace the bobbin case 3 times. Buy a sturdier machine

Workhorse Machine!

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Strong & Sturdy! Built To Last

I purchased my CG-590 back in 2007. I was unexperienced when I first had it so, the timing went out by the 2nd yr. because I kept using the Wrong bobbin type and did not care to learn about creating the settings manually for each fabric, also needle type is VERY important.

Over the years, I realized this machine worked wonders for me, sewing from fine silk, to Heavy Denim. I have sewn silk ball gowns, wedding dresses to sewing rubber and Scuba diving Thick fabric!

Again, the best results come from reading your manual carefully and referring to it often to understand your machine, Using correct needle types, correct bobbins (this one is plastic class 66), and correct settings with reasonable thread. Great results for years to come, I noticed a Lot of issues I had before were my OWN user problems I had to overcome. This is a GREAT quality machine, plus the motor is so awesome!

The machine was a gift over two years ago. I am not gentle on it, I sew a lot and this machine has held up to everything I've put it thru. I've had it serviced once. I am very happy and would recommend this machine to anybody and everybody.

Read the manual and its the best machine I have ever work on or with. I work with all kind of fabric and leather as well and this machine is my beast. It will sew anything as long as the tension is set properly for what you are sewing. The pedal is great but I would not wear shoes since only a slight pressure on the pedal is needed.

Solid machine - needs better manual.

The provided product manual is absolute garbage. If you have experience with other machines, you can probably figure it out, but why couldn't someone have spent just a little bit of time improving the instruction manual.

Unhappy with purchase

This is the worst machine I have ever owned. The tension will not stay and great gobs of thread on the bottom are a common frustration. I have returned it 2 times, but the tension keeps going leaving great loops and uneven stitches. If I could afford it, I would ditch this machine and get a new one.

Like it but...

This seems to be a good machine but the light isn't bright enough, had to purchase a tabletop light to supplement lighting. Machine is loud, when sewing through multiple layers it sound like a freight train. Otherwise I haven't had any problems familiarizing myself with it.

Great Machine, Bad instructions

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, High Quality

Cons: Owners Manual Needs To Be Improved , Light Needs To Be Modified

3 out of 4 people found this helpful.

I purchased the machine on 11-28-13 and received it on 12-05-13. The owners manual was very confusing on how to set up bobin. The light is not adequate, very dim. Once all was set up it sews like a champ on soft leather and vinyl. Just had to set up an exterior lamp to see. I would recommend this machine to a friend.

Sturdy Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use

Cons: Needs A Heavy Duty Ruffler To Go With Heavy Duty Machine

Love this machine! No problems with it yet except one. I am having a hard time getting a ruffler to work on this machine and that is a big reason I bought the commercial version. Everything else is great sews through multiple layers of fabric just great. I am still learning great things I can do with this machine. I would recommend this machine to someone that sews all kinds of fabric like me.

Cg590

Overall Rating:

Pros: Good Value, Great Features, Easy To Use, High Quality

Cons: Automatic Threader Came Loose From Its Connection

I've only had the machine for about 2 months. The automatic threader came loose from it attachment on the inside which caused to needle to hit the needle plate every time i tried to sew. I did use the machine a lot using canvas fabric to make handbags. The machine does rattle when I sew, which may have caused the threader to come loose.

I've been very please with this machine up until this point. I'm currently seeking advice as to how it can be fixed.

Find A Better Machine

Overall Rating:

Pros: Easy To Use

Cons: Poor Quality

I bought this machine and did little on it for the first couple of months of ownership. I started a project (a pillow) and couldn't get it stitched before the mechanism bound up. In total, I have made less than 100 inches of total stitches.

I took it to an authorized Singer sewing center and was told it was not covered by warranty. I ended up paying another 42% of the purchase price to get it out of the shop - all along cursing myself for throwing good money after bad. The service technician explained to me that the machine had not been adjusted/lubricated properly at the manufacturing site. It sure seems like this would be basic process - but Singer must know how to build sewing machines (?).

Not sure what "commercial grade" means, it sure doesn't mean it is a reliable product.

I believe you would serve yourself well by looking for another brand.

CG590

Overall Rating:

Cons: Poor Quality, Complicated

This machine was purchased to do heavy duty sewing on a variety of materials. For basic sewing projects, it does ok. However, there are some problems. The self threader is basically useless. The bobbin tangles and has since the first test use after purchase. The tension is difficult to keep at a proper tautness. Changing to different feet is tricky at best. After using this machine for the past 2 months, I regret the purchase.
